Access Log Analyzers

• Some of the packages below are multiple protocol systems that work for http and others.
• Several of the Perl scripts in the Unix section ought to be useful for other platforms as well.

Platform independent

• Bazaar Analyzer - a web server log analyzer developed by Aquas Inc. Their own feature summary mentions that it will work with any Java compatible browser, it supports standard server logs, provides interactive graphical data analysis, reports total number of accesses, alerts on specific access, Online and Offline log analysis, supports multiple servers and multiple users, easily customizable reports, domain profiles of visiting domains, and that is offers complete automation of reporting. A basic version is currently available for free, while the standard version is available for a charge.
• 3D UWwebmon from UWsoftware is a java applet and is therefore compatible with any Java compatible browser. Jason Starr at UWwebmon says that it is fully graphical and can analyse web usage by a number of criteria - it can also be programmed to flag specific events.
• Accrue Insight, from Accure Software, is a java based tool for data collection and analysis. The software is on-the-wire where it can observe communication flow between sites and users on a network. It sees live network transactions in addition to data stored in application log files. Rosella Fernandez says that it is capable of analyzing extremely high volumes of data.
• WebCrumbs, from thinWEB.COM, is a Java based application with point-and-click interface to web pages. It can be connected to databases, and provides rules for the webmaster which can be used to link Web pages in ways to lead lead visitors to preferred locations.
• WatchWise, from WatchWise, Ltd., provides real-time monitoring and statistical reporting, including path analysis. Apparently each access to your Web site will automatically be stored in an integraded performance data base on their server.
• Ewla, by Frederic Tyndiuk, is an analyzer program written i Perl.
• Webtrax, by Tom Van Vleck, is a free Perl 5-based analyzer for NCSA Combined format logs with referrer and browser in addition. Text and graphical reports, where certain graphical output is enhanced by Java technology.

Unix

• http-analyze - a web server log analyzer developed by Stefan Stapelberg at RENT-A-GURU®. http-analyze incorporates the most important functions known from other popular statistic programs, and adds a few of its own. It is available for free.
• SurfReport and ProxyReport from NETRICS.COM.
• InSite -- see Windows NT
• WebLog Manager Pro from Monocle Solutions goes further than pure analyzers and generates a script (using Perl) and then by use of cookies captures more pertinent info that users want. They also sell E-Commerce Tracker.
• WebLog by Darryl C. Burgdorf.
• Sawmill (formerly known as Chartreuse Cartouche) from Flowerfire, reads web server logs in user definable formats, and generates detailed graphical pages of information describing which pages were hit, where hits came from, who referred the hits, and when hits occurred. It is invoked as a CGI program, and can serve stats live from the log as well as from a database. Configuration is made through a WWW interface. In addition to seven unix flavours, the product is also available on Windows 95/NT and Macintosh. At the time of writing the price is USD 49 (9 for educational licenses).
• SiteTrack from Group Cortex tracks web surfers as they enter, move through, and leave a web site. It requires a Netscape server
• NetTracker, from Sane Solutions, is a commercial product that resides on the server. The company stresses ease of use in their marketing.
• The Webalizer, by Bradford L. Barret, is a fast, free web server log analysis program that produces statistics in HTML format. It supports CLF and various extended combined log formats for user agent and referrer stats.
  Jan Kneschke has improved the webalizer into myWebalizer, relieving certain limitations of the original program. He quit development of myWebalizer some time ago, and it is now succeeded by ModLogAn.

• net.Analysis Pro -- see Windows NT
• Perl WebStat is a Perl script by Arthur Corliss at from Gallant Technology. WebStat generates a multi-page HTML report, including GIF graphs, that summarise the most common types of statistics.
• SiteSense Lite from Shockwave Productions analyzes IIS logs. Their web site stresses ease of installation and the fact that they use an ODBC database for dynamic creation of reports, rather than a fixed format of reporting.
• Active LogView -- see Windows NT
• Dog, by Eric Gracyalny, is a Perl based analysis tool that concentrates on domain statistics and browser usage.
• Checklog, from RPG net, is a simple Perl script for reducing an access or error log down into a report on pages and visits. It tries to guess the number of people visiting a server, and how deep they go into the site. Details are available from RPG.
• BotWatch, by Simon Wilkinson, is a Perl script that analyses log files (in either the Common, or NCSA Extended log file formats) and produces an HTML page reporting on the robots seen.
• WWWstats, by Lars Marius Garshol, is a package of three Perl scripts that run under both Win95/NT and UNIX. It shows listings by page, hour of day, day of month, browser, OS, domain, referral, and client machine.
• wwwstat - will process a sequence of NCSA httpd_1.2 (or later) access_log files and output a log summary in HTML format suitable for publishing on your web.
  • Metasummary summarizes wwwstat output.
  • gwstat by Qiegang Long processes the html output from wwwstat, and generates a set of GIF graphs to illustrate the httpd server traffic by hour, day, week or calling country/domain.
• wusage, a C program by Thomas Boutell that can generate graphs and nifty graph icons along with basic weekly log statistics. Works with common logfile format and plexus. Several platforms are supported, including Unix, WMS Windows, Windows 95, Windows NT, OS/2 and MS-DOS.
• Web Usage Mining from IBM is a technology demo.
• LogScribe, a Perl script by Usama Wazeer and Daniel Cedras, based on Graphical Access Stats by Matt Kruse. LogScribe was known as KwikStat for a short while.
• getstats is a C program by Kevin Hughes that will produce detailed, concise, monthly, weekly, daily summary, daily, hourly summary, hourly, domain, request, directory tree, and error reports from your HTTP or UNIX Gopher server.
  • CreateStats by Doug Stevenson is a front end to getstats that takes (weekly) log files and formats them to nifty sets of HTML organized by date and information type.
  • Getgraph by Martien Verbruggen is another companion product to getstats that produces graphical versions of the reports.
• Analog by Stephen Turner used to be much like a faster version of getstats, but with slightly different format and options. It has now evolved into a highly confiugrably, more fully fledged program which can output in seven languages. It is available for several platforms.
• STstat by Spiros Trivizas is a collection of CGI programs in C that produce statistics based on the various logs that the Http server keeps.
• getstats_plot is a C-shell script that produces access plots.
• WebCube Census by James B. Crocker takes a somewhat different approach to analysis by concentrating not only on access history, but on the accuracy of their web resources.
• WebReport is a Perl NCSA log analyzer that comes with NCSA's httpd.
• analyse_access - will generate printable summaries of the main accessors and most popular pages from an NCSA HTTPD V1.1 access log. Optionally restarts the log.
• Statbot From their WWW page: Statbot is a WWW log analyzer, statistics generator, and database program. It works by "snooping" on the logfiles generated by most WWW servers and creating a database that contains information about the WWW server. This database is then used to create a statistics page and GIF charts that can be "linked to" by other WWW resources.
• WebStat is a Python program.
• WebStat, recently released for demonstration, is a perl-cgi script that Web information providers can use to run detailed analysis of traffic patterns on their Web sites. Because WebStat is a perl-cgi-based tool, Hunter says it can be run on almost any platform and is relatively cost effective for the user.
• Combined Log File Handling System - process your large WWW, ftp, gopher, ... logs and produce meaningful summaries. Author: Dave Beckett
• iistat by Steven Nemetz at Lotus is another combined log handling system that takes care of WWW and other servers.
• Paul Beard has written a short Perl script that summarizes log files.
• fwgstat is capable of parsing the usage files for most of the public access protocols in use today: FTP, Gopher, WAIS, the Plexus, NCSA v1.1, and Common log formats of HTTP, and writing a nice usage report from them.
• pwebstats is a fully featured log analyser and statistics generator, written in perl and developed by Martin Gleeson of the CWIS Team at The University of Melbourne. Works for proxy/cache servers.
• Emily is a statistics program that allows you to get a nice graphical representation of the accesses to a page in your system.
• Web-Scope(tm) Statistics
• AccessWatch provides comprehensive server statistics, including an excellent graphical interface, and an easy installation.
• W3Olista produces reports online. You can browse your statistics with your favourite WWW browser, and actually zoom into them simply by clicking on any item.
• MK-Stats by Matt Kruseis a log-analysis tool that handles multiple logs produced by several WWW servers, and produces output in several formats. Graphical, raytraced, textual reports according to Yahoo. You may take a look at his Raytraced Access Stats too.

  The current version of this shareware package is 2.0. It's a perl5 script that reads in your web server's logs and gives back meaningfull reports that are easy to read and present the information that you really want to see. Some of the features are processing of access_log, agent_log, error_log, and referer_log for a complete analysis. Incremental runs. Allows for multiple reads of the same log. Can be run by any user who can read the log files. Plug-in reports and headers/footers allow easy customization. Multiple configuration files.

• W3Perl is a graphical stats package written in Perl by Laurent Domisse. It is claimed to be one of the most complete stats tool available with lots of features, including the ability to be used on hosts without access to neither telnet nor cgi's. It is incremental, works with crunched logfile, have multi-language support and many more, including the ability to report on keywords used to find pages by search engines. Current version (1998-06-05) is 2.38.
• 3Dstats, by Stefan Stapelberg, analyzes the logfile of a web server and creates a simple three-dimensional VRML model of the server's load by day and by hour.
• Multi WebServer Statistics Tool (a.k.a. mw3s) is a Perl script to gather statistics generated on several webservers and produce a unified list of the twenty most popular pages. It has now evolved into mswc, Multi Server WebCharts.
• FTPweblog by Benjamin "Snowhare" Franz.

• FTPWebLog is a freeware integrated WWW and FTP log reporting tool.
• WAMP (Who Accessed My Pages) is a perl script designed to provide information about people accessing a particular user's pages on a server.
  
• daily graph script (in perl) to produce a bar graph of connections/hosts(x10) for http server connections, by Rob. Hartill 1994.
• ATstats is an interactive access analyzer from Anachron Technologies.
• Snowhare (Benjamin Franz) is a suite of log analysis tools written in Perl.
• logview by Bill Kendrick.

Windows NT

• InSite from Core Systems is a crossplatform analyzer. It appears to provide a fairly complete set of the ususal functions, including path analysis.
• net.Analysis Pro from net.Genesis Corp. is a client/server based tool for Web usage and analysis. The server stores the aggregated data in a relational database. The client, net.Analysis Reporter, produces reports, including paths, by drill-down techniques. Server and client are avilable for Solaris and Windows NT. They also offer net.Analysis Desktop, which is a client software that allows organizations to access information regarding the traffic to their web server from a PC. It is available on Windows NT.
• Surfstats log analyzer from Surfstats is a program by Johan Calitz. Tucows rated it at five cows.
• Web Site Visitor Log from Bacus Laboratories, Inc.
• NetIntellect from net.Genesis Corporation is a client/server solution for Solaris and NT which allows for distributed access.
• FastStats by Mark Rosen is a fast log analyzer for Windows NT and Windows95/98. In addition to the usual reports it provides lists of referers causing 404 errors and search engine keywords used to access the server.
• WebTrends from E.G. Software is claimed to be compatible with any web server, including Oracle's. A free trial can be downloaded from their Web Site.
• WebChallenger from WindDance Networks is a Distributed Web Site Management System. One component of that system is Web Statistics, which provides usage reporting and analysis.
• FlashStats from Maximized Software is a log file analyzer for Mac, NT, and a couple of Unix dialects. It reports on keyword usage to find pages from the top 15 search engines.
• NetIntellect from Webmanage is a 32-bit Log Analysis Tool for Windows NT and Windows 95. I generates reports in tables and graphs that show statistical, geographic and marketing trends in the Web site usage. It is claimed to be compatible with all common HTTPD servers.
• Hit List from Marketwave is a sophisticated log analyzer for Windows NT and Windows95. It is claimed to be able to analyze logs created on anything, but offers transparent handling for Microsoft IIS, O'Reilly WebSite and NT-based Netscape.
• Intersé market focus from Intersé is a commercial analysis tool that does 3-D visualization of visitor behavior data, integrates external data to obtain visitor profiles, and manages complex multihomed and replicated server environments. It supports several RDBMS, and Intersé says it is independently auditable by ABVS or BPA. Reports are presented as HTML, Word, Excel, or text. It is also available for Windows 95.
• Active LogView, by Sergei Polishchuk, is a small program that installs on the server, saving the download of log files and allows anyone with a browser to access reports. It can analyze log files from MS IIS and process them at up to 100 Megabytes per minute. It provides analysis of: total requests, unique visits, advanced referrers list, hourly summary and more.
• Funnel Web from Active Concepts provides statistical analysis and profiling of Web site, and to some extent ftp server, usage. It's got extensive filtering capabilities, and supports asynchronous DNS lookups. It can use the extended logs available from several popular servers for e.g. referral and browser information.
• LumberJack, by John Dailey with help from Don Fogelman, is a tool for analysis of logs from Internet Information Server 2.0 and up. It is programmed in Visual Basic 5.0.
• ILux web server log analyzer, is a fully distributed client/server solution, runs on Windows and UNIX, ODBC compliant database, and has a Java Client. It constantly monitors your web server for real-time analysis, and includes alert functions that monitors specific events.
• Web Tracker by Cambridge Quality Management, Inc. is, according to the company, an interactive, graphical logfile analyzer. Features advanced statistical sampling to handle very large logfiles, fast drill-down and exploration of access patterns. When this is being written, the price is $495.
• Statistics Server, by MediaHouse Software Inc., is focusing on statistics for "This moment," rather than running batch analysis. It provides session analysis, and uses a WHOIS database (located at MediaHouse) in order to give some demographic data. They also sell a monitoring system, Enterprise Monitor.
• Webtrak by Know-It provides, according to the company, HTTPD log analysis and reporting on CERN formatted log ( Common Log File (NCSA)). The report is in HTML and contains statistics and bar charts.
• MUSAGE is a Perl script for analysing usage logs from the EMWAC Windows NT 'https' World Wide Web and 'gophers' gopher servers. It is also being used on Unix systems running, for example, cern3 httpd.
• PressView is a Log File DataBase and Reporting for HTTP servers on the Windows NT platform.
• Webstat from Huntana is another commercial offering.

• VBStats is a relational database-based log analyzer for the Common Log Format. Has DB loader, HTML-reporter, and auto-graph-generator. Produces linked report sets and fancy graphs (using VB Graph VBX). Access and/or VB NOT needed this package is self contained. Also found at VB-Stats.
• Webtrac from Logical Design Solutions reports on World Wide Web server usage.
• iView from PRS Net is a shareware package that uses the World Wide Web access statistics generated by the Internet Audit Bureau to generate charts and graphs for easy interpretation of these statistics. It appears to withdrawn from the original location at PRS Net, but can be found on the net, e.g. at Webside.
• Axxstats, by Johan Larsson, is a DOS program that reports on server requests caused by specific top-level domains.

Macintosh

• WWWStat4Mac is a log analyzer written by Peter Hardman. It can be used to process files for any log file in the common log format.
• MacHTTP Tuil: Stats
• Site Stat, by Vince Predoehl, is a log analysis application for Macintosh. It can parse Common Log Format or WebSTAR 2.0 log files.
• Bolero, from Everyware, captures logging information from a Macintosh WWW server, storing it into a SQL database. Companion products, e.g. Tango, or Excel can be used for reporting.
