In its early days the community of Chilliwack served as a pass through for the fur traders and miners from Yale and Hope. The original name for our town in 1873 was Chilliwhack. In 1881 a big subdivision named Centerville was formed. In 1887 the subdivision of Centerville was renamed Chilliwack and this area called Chilliwack was voted a municipality known as the city of Chilliwack. The city of Chilliwack and the town of Chilliwhack were different sections for 72 years, in 1980 they came together to be known as the city of Chilliwack.

Chilliwack's neighbours are the US/Canada border to the south, Abbotsford to the west, the Fraser River to the north and the unincorporated area of the Fraser Valley Regional District as well as Bridal Falls and Hope to the east.
