Secret of the Cabby's Medallion

Writer: Otto Binder

Penciller: Gil Kane

Inker: Joe Giella

Synopsis: Space Cabby stops at a customs station in space before landing on Earth. The customs agent scans the cabby's medallion, which matches Space Cabby's aura, and also scans to make sure there are no suspicious auras in the cab. After Space Cabby drops off his fare, he goes to get his driver's license renewed. He expects to have no trouble, and while in the testing module, he tries to do the right things, but the computer doesn't respond properly, and as a result, he fails the test. His medallion is taken from him, and he's told that it will be re-attuned to the aura of the next applicant. In a while, a man named Pete Duff tells him that he got Space Cabby's medallion and offers to buy his cab from him, an offer Space Cabby unhappily accepts. Later, Space Cabby hails a cab to Mars. While he dozes off, the driver is blinded by a sudden flare. Space Cabby takes over the wheel, and he guides the cab to its destination perfectly, doing properly all of the things that went wrong on his test. He deduces, properly, that someone must have tampered with the testing machine to make him fail, and suspects his successor, Pete Duff. He tracks his old cab through a leakage of radioactive fuel, and catches Duff while he's filling up the cab. After Space Cabby roughs him up a bit, Duff confesses to having tampered with his test in order to be able to get a medallion. He explains that he stole a gem on Earth to sell on Sirius, and in order to get it past customs, he needed to get it attuned to his own aura with a cabby's medallion, so it wouldn't be detected seperately from him. Space Cabby has Duff arrested and takes the tests again, passing them and getting back his medallion and his job.
