The Expanding Space-Taxi

Writer: Otto Binder

Penciller: Gil Kane

Inker: Bernard Sachs

Synopsis: Space Cabby, on his way back from Rigel, passes through a strange mist. He hears calls to pick up large numbers of passengers and rues the fact that his cab can only take three passengers. However, when he picks up three on Pluto, his cab appears to be very roomy, and when he lands, it's visibly bigger, so he takes on more passengers. Once he's in space, though, the cab continues to get bigger, to the point where the controls are out of Space Cabby's reach, and they're unable to land on any planet. Space Cabby theorizes that the mist he went through was the focal point of the expanding universe, so his cab began to expand with it. As the cab approaches Earth, it appears to Earth like a comet. Space Cabby then notices that the moon is in danger of falling out of its orbit. The giant cab could help, but it's so big that the controls are thousands of miles away from the seat on which the cabby and his passengers are standing. The radio microphone is nearby, so Space Cabby radios Earth to tell them that his giant cab is the "comet," and that they should send a spaceship through their window immediately. Earth does so, and Space Cabby uses it to get around his cab and manipulate the controls so that the cab can pick up the moon and put it properly in orbit. Once he's saved Earth, Space Cabby hits on an idea of how he can get his cab back to normal size: he flies to a variable cepheid star which is in a stage of contraction, which gets the cab to contract with it. Once he is back to normal size, he lands on Earth, and his passengers run away, frightened of what might happen next. Space Cabby is upset because they failed to pay his fare, but soon he discovers that due to his saving the Earth, every gas station on Earth has agreed to fill him up for free for a year, something that consoles him as an oversized passenger fills the entire back seat of his cab.

Notes: Space Cabby's theory about what caused his expansion and contraction are obviously quite wrong.

When Space Cabby calls Earth, he identifies himself only as "Space Cabby," indicating that that might be his proper name.
