One-Way Ride to Eternity

Writer: Otto Binder

Penciller: Gil Kane

Inker: Bernard Sachs

Synopsis: Space Cabby picks up a fare, who suddenly pulls a gun on him and tells him that he just committed a robbery and that he needs Space Cabby to get him safely out of the solar system with his loot. He tells Space Cabby that as soon as they pass Pluto, he'll continue on alone...and threatens to kill Space Cabby if he sees him trying to radio the Interplanetary Police. Space Cabby realizes that his only chance to stop the crook and survive the trip is to get himself pulled over for breaking traffic laws in a way that the crook will not suspect he's doing it intentionally. He sees a magnetic meteor and allows it to pull him faster than the speed limit, but the police attribute his speed to the meteor and destroy it, but don't stop him. He attempts to enter a one-way highway the wrong way, but as soon as he reaches it, the one-way changes direction so he's going the right way after all. Then he sees he's near the off-limits "space Fort Knox," but as he tries to approach it, he sees it's closed down, having moved to a new location. He tells the crook that he has to stop for gas, intending to leave without paying, but the gas station has a clamp to prevent people from leaving without paying. Finally, the crook realizes that they're beyond Pluto's orbit. As the crook is about to make Space Cabby get out of the cab, Space Cabby asks, as a favor, to be able to see what the crook stole. The crook removes from a box a large diamond, and, as he's showing Space Cabby the diamond, Space Cabby quietly jettisons the box. Soon, a police cruiser stops them. The crook tells them that they have no jurisdiction that far out, but Space Cabby tells him he's wrong - Space Cabby's cab's speedometer is off and counts miles too quickly, and they were actually still within the solar system. Space Cabby tells the crook that he had caught the police's attention by throwing refuse into space. Space Cabby then asks the police officers to not give him a ticket for that offense, as he was just trying to save himself from the crook. The officer agrees...but tickets him for having a bad speedometer and overcharging his fares.
