Trail of the Glowing Atoms

Writer: Otto Binder

Penciller: Gil Kane

Inker: Joe Giella

Synopsis: Space Cabby is cruising for fares when suddenly his battery dies on him. He's nowhere near a garage, so he signals the Solar Spaceship Service to come and help him. He expects a long wait, but a truck bearing the SSS symbol arrives in only a few minutes and tells him that his battery wires are loose, and re-attaches them. As the mechanic is working, Space Cabby notices that the repair truck's exhaust glows, presu, ably due to their using a very high grade of fuel. Space Cabby turns off his signal, and the mechanic reports back to his boss. Space Cabby takes off, but he soon realizes that the "repair" wasn't a good one; his windshield wipers run too quickly, his heater makes the cab cold, the brakes cause the cab to skid and his turns signals point the wrong way. After narrowly avoiding an accident caused by the turn signal malfunction, he tries to apologize to the frieghter that he had almost hit, but they reply that they'd just been robbed by bandits disguised as an SSS repair crew. Space Cabby realizes that it must be these bandits who "repaired" his cab and pursues them by following the glow of their vapor trail. The bandits, deciding that their SSS ship is sure to have been reported already, see the cab and decide to swap their ship for it. Space Cabby knowingly enters their trap, and laughs as they have trouble controlling the cab due to the way they "repaired" it. Soon, they bring the cab down, right into the hands of Space Cabby and the Interplanetary Police, who he had summoned. The police promise him a reward, and Space Cabby then summons the real SSS...who, as he had originally expected, take hours to show up.

Notes: The SSS is based on the American Automobile Association, or AAA.
