Follow the Space-Leader

Writer: Otto Binder

Penciller: Gil Kane

Inker: Bernard Sachs

Synopsis: Space Cabby drives a fare along the space thruway, thinking about how boring the highway is. After landingm he gets a fare to Neptune who, to his delight, asks him to go by a scenic route. Space Cabby takes old Spaceway 88, and shows his fare the interesting sights. Eventually, he notices that a ship has been following him for a while, but when he tries to lose it, his fare pulls a gun on him and explains that he's part of a gang that just committed a robbery and didn't dare use the thruway, so they, in the car behind the cab, are using him to lead them to their destination in a roundabout way. Space Cabby tries to think of an inconspicuous way to contact the Interplanetary Police, by tricking the car following him to commit an infraction. He tries to land for gas at a service station that one is supposed to glide into without power, but discovers that the gliding is nolonger required, so the crooks, who rocketed in, did nothing wrong. He tries to trick them into running into a space whirlpool, but the crooks see it and avoid it. He attempts to innocently sing into his radio a song that would hint to the police that criminals are chasing him, but the gunman in his car had already disconnected his radio. They arrive at the gang's hideout, where the gang hold him prisoner, but soon, the Interplanetary Police raid the hideout, tipped off by Space Cabby's inadvertent failure to respond to an SOS...because his radio had been cut by the crooks. Later, he takes all his fares by way of the thruway, realizing the dangers of using old, out-of-the-way routes.

Notes: The space thruway is an allusion to the United States Interstate Highway system, and Spaceway 88 is a reference to the famous U.S. Route 66.
