Search for a Star

Writer: Otto Binder

Penciller: Bernard Sachs

Inker: Bernard Sachs

Synopsis: Space Cabby is hailed by Jak Bruce, an old swashbuckling action movie star who had gone into seclusion many years earlier. Space Cabby gets his autograph, but when he asks Jak why he retired from acting, Jak is silent. After Jak Bruce leaves the cab, Space Cabby sees a mask of Jak's face on the ground, leading him to assume that the man he had just driven was an impostor. After taking another fare, Space Cabby goes to Jak Bruce's estate to tell him of the impostor, but the workers tell him he left without saying where he was going. Space Cabby suspects that the actor was kidnaped and returns to Mars. He finds the house that Jak Bruce had gone into and sees the actor lying unconscious on a bed with a ray aiming at his face. He abducts the actor and runs, eluding the pursuit of the men who are trying to get Jak Bruce back. However, the chase uses up Space Cabby's gas and he's forced to land on an asteroid. Space Cabby summons the Interplanetary Police. When Jak Bruce wakes up, he tells Space Cabby that he had gone to Mars for treatment to restore his face to its youthful appearance so he could resume working in film and be remembered the way he was...hence the mask. Now, however, Space Cabby interrupted the treatment, and soon Jak's aged face will return. Space Cabby realizes what a mistake he made, but before they can fix it, they are attacked by savages. Jak, despite his temporarily youthful appearance, is unable to drive them off due to his old muscles, so Space Cabby, imitating his screen hero's moves, saves them. They make their way back to the cab, where the Interplanetary Police are ready to pick them up, and Jak realizes that even if his old face were restored, his muscles wouldn't allow him to play the roles he had in his youth. Space Cabby convinces Jak to become a character actor, a suggestion that pays off when he wins the Space-Oscar award six months later.
