The Case of the Martian Witness
Writer: John Broome
Penciller: Mike Sekowsky
Inker: Bernard Sachs
Synopsis: In the year 2079, Private Eye Star Hawkins looks for a job which will help him pay his bills and redeem his robotic secretary, Ilda, from the pawn shop. He sees an advertisement for someone wanting a person to track down a fugitive in the asteroid belt. The fugitive turns out to be a Martian named Qar-Miq, who is apparently hiding on the asteroid Vesta. Deducing that the best place for a person to hide would be the red jungle, Star heads into the dangerous region and finds Qar-Miq, telling him that he is an important witness in a dispute between an Earthman named Charl Scott and a Jovian named Djirr over a mining claim. Star sneakily takes him down by knocking a piece of the jungle vegetation on him and brings Qar-Miq to Earth, to be interrogated by Scott and his lawyer. Star then redeems Ilda and promises to never pawn her again...a promise she doesn't truly expect him to keep.
Notes: This is the first appearance of Star Hawkins and Ilda.
This story takes place in the year 2079.
