The Case of the Robot-Spy

Writer: John Broome

Penciller: Mike Sekowsky

Inker: Bernard Sachs

Synopsis: Star Hawkins converses with Ilda about the state of his finances, and during the conversation, it comes out that Ilda has rudimentary telepathic abilities. She demonstrates them by reading from his mind the details of the case he's working on - the theft of the Lemo jewels from one Mr. Draves. Star, who feels he'd be distracted by the idea of Ilda reading his mind, gives her the day off. She uses it to secretly help Star by disguising herself as one of the Gaddos, the gypsy-aliens who are Star's main suspects in the case. She successfully infiltrates the Gaddo camp, but after the Gaddo chief decides they must leave the area and she finds herself unable to slip away, she strains her telepathic spool to contact Star. After a sudden strong wind exposes her, Star arrives to stop the Gaddo chief from damaging her, and he notes that the wind blew the leaves off of all the trees nearby except one. He deduces that that one is artificial, and inside it, he finds the Lemo jewels, for which he receives a sizable reward.

Notes: This story takes place on April 5, 2080.

Detective rating: The wind was luck, but Star had already had the Gaddos as his prime suspect, and he was able to get the clues from the trees. 8 on a scale of 1 to 10.
