The Case of the Robot Detective
Writer: John Broome
Penciller: Mike Sekowsky
Inker: Bernard Sachs
Synopsis: As Star Hawkins lies injured from a case involving criminal metal men from Andromeda, the manager of the Tip-Top department store contacts him about finding a stolen diamond. He refuses the job due to his injuries, but after he gets another call, this time about locating a missing toy rocket, he decides that he can't turn down all cases, so he asks Ilda to apply the methods she's learned from him and to attempt to solve the case. Ilda goes to the house from which the toy rocket was lost and notes several broken windows in the path the rocket must have flown. She follows the path, which ends in a certain nearby apartment and asks the occupants if they had seen the rocket, but they tell her they hadn't. She suspects that they are lying and attempts to look around, which results in their attacking her. Ilda, though, proves herself to be the better fighter (or at least the better-built fighter) and defeats them, sustaining a dent in the process. She soon discovers that the stolen diamond had been hidden inside the toy rocket and later explains to Star that the toy department was located next to the jewelry department at the Tip Top department store, and that the thieves hid the diamond in the rocket when they heard the alarm react to their crime. She explains that when they discovered the following day that their toy rocket had been purchased, they set up a radio transmitter to make the rocket come to them by remote control. Star expresses his pride in her and brings her to have her body mended as his is mending.
Detective rating: Ilda used her brains and followed the clues properly in finding the toy rocket. Getting the diamond, however, was pure luck. Still, that wasn't the case they took. 9 on a scale of 1 to 10.
