The Case of the 3-Eyed Invaders
Writer: John Broome
Penciller: Mike Sekowsky
Inker: Bernard Sachs
Synopsis: Ilda goes to clean Star Hawkins's apartment. She tries to open the door to apartment 3H, but finds that she doesn't have the key to it and enters through the transom. After cleaning that apartment, she realizes that she was in the wrong apartment, as Star lives in 2H. After she leaves to really clean Star's apartment, several alien beings appear in 3H, revealing that they had made themselves invisible to Ilda, who they assumed to be a spy trying to stop their planned destruction of all life on Earth. They use a ring-device to immobilize Ilda and drain her energy, but she manages to hear their plans while their ring is aimed to her. She tries to telepathically send Star a message to stop them, but finds her range too short. She then telepathically transmits the message to Star's nearby telephone, which contacts Star's answering service, who pass along the message to Star. Star find the immobilized Ilda and she tells him about the aliens and their plans. Star attacks them and defeats them, turning off the ring device which was draining the energy from Ilda. Star then hands the aliens over to the police and tells Ilda to rest, and that he would clean his apartment himself that week...although Ilda, while thankful, knows he won't do an adequate job.
Detective rating: What a wild coincidence...the aliens camp out in the apartment above Star and Ilda accidentally enters the wrong apartment, enabling her to discover their plot which no one had ever known of beforehand! Pure luck. 1 on a scale of 1 to 10.
