The Case of the Robot Brother
Writer: John Broome
Penciller: Mike Sekowsky
Inker: Bernard Sachs
Synopsis: As Ilda repairs one of Star Hawkins's shoes, Star reads to her a new item about a robot who turned criminal, which infuriates her. Star then heads out on an assignment to find a ruby necklace, which he suspects was stolen by the "Meteor" Morgan Gang. While he's tracking the gang down through his contacts in the underworld, Ilda notes that the criminal robot has the same serial number that she does, except that he's male - she is F2324, and the criminal is M2324. She theorizes that something has affected M2324's brain-circuit, and that she might be able to track him down by trying to electronically sense that malfunction. Meanwhile, the "Meteor" Morgan Gang has a meeting with the criminal M2324, who dictates that he will take over leadership of the gang. Suddenly, Star, who traced the gang to its hideout, bursts in, and he blasts the criminal robot, who falls. He then engages in a shoot-out with the human gangsters. Ilda, meanwhile, had namaged to track M2324's brain-circuit to that same place, and she enters the room. Star, knowing that she's more bulletproof than other robots, uses her as a shield and advances on the gangsters, eventually winning the shootout. Ilda then examines M2324 and discovers that he has a screw loose, which she fixes, causing M2324 to become a model robot and ending his disgrace of robotkind.
Notes: This issue contains the first mention of Ilda's real "name", F2324.
Detective rating: Good detective work by both Star and Ilda. The minor coincidence of their two quarries being in the same place was not too implausible. 9 on a scale of 1 to 10.
