The Case of the Rebellious Space-Crew

Writer: John Broome

Penciller: Mike Sekowsky

Inker: Bernard Sachs

Synopsis: Star Hawkins reveals to Ilda the bad news that he lost her in a game of Bjerr to his friend, Dirk Danton. He tried to excuse himself by relating the fact that he had what might have been an excellent hand, but that his opponent called his bluff and Star was forced to reveal that his hand was indeed the weaker of the two. Star tries to console her by telling her that Dirk invited them both on a cruise in his space-yacht for the weekend, and that they wouldn't have to part company until the weekend was over. The two of them board the ship and, while Star continues to play cards with his friend, Ilda takes an interest in how to fly the ship. The ship's captain shows her how and lets her fly it briefly. The captain complains about the Plutonian crew, who spend their time reading books...and Ilda takes a look at them. Ilda notices that the books are all about piracy or mutiny, and, sure enough, the Plutonian crew mutinies. Ilda, and later, Star, try to fight them, but they prove too much for the heroes to handle. As they lay there, Star pulls out a device with a button, tells the mutineers that they must surrender, or Star will blow up the ship. After some hemming and hawing, the mutineers surrender, and Star presses the button on the device, which had turned out to be a cigarette dispenser rather than a bomb detonator, proving that he can manage a good bluff after all.

Detective rating: Crazy coincidence that the crew mutinies the very same time that Star is vacationing on it. However, Star did carry off the bluff quite nicely. 3 on a scale of 1 to 10.
