The Case of the Blonde Bombshell

Writer: Dave Wood

Penciller: Gil Kane

Inker: Gil Kane

Synopsis: Ilda sees what appears to be a silhouette of a fight in the office of Star Hawkins. She breaks into his office, only to find that Star and the other person, who Star introduces to Ilda as Miss Lulu Lacey, are kissing one another. Ilda, convinced that Lulu is up to something, meets them at the restaurant where they have a date while she is disguied as a waitress. Ilda spills wine on Lulu as she hears her give Star a pouch in which to put some letters that a blackmailer is supposed to return to her. Ilda follws Lulu home, and she discovers that Lulu is actually a spy working to help overthrow the Martian government, and that the "letters" she expects Star to pick up are actually plans for that revolution. The next day, Ilda goes to the spaceport to meet Star, who is arriving from Mars with Lulu's letters. When Star reaches her, she pretends to faint, causing Star to drop the "letters" to pick her up. Lulu then arrives, looking for the "letters," and she picks them up off the ground while Star rushes Ilda to a robot recharging station. When Lulu brings the pouch back to her confederates, they find that it is filled with paper dolls. The revolutionaries assume that Star Hawkins had caught onto their scheme and send some men to get the papers from him. They arrive at Star's office and demand the pland, but Star tells them he has no idea what they're talking about. Ilda then comes to life and knocks them out, and then shows him their plans for an overthrow of the Martian government, which Ilda had picked up at the airport, substituting the paper dolls for them. Star gets angry at having been used, both by the Martians and Lulu, and he and Ilda head for their base of operations to stop them. Star and Ilda easily handle most of the Martians and Lulu, but are forced to stop fighting when Kratun, the Martian gang's leader, shows up. As Kratun approaches Star to kill him, he passes by Lulu, and Lulu blows blush into Kratun's face, putting him off-balance and allowing Star to get the upper hand over him. While Star is beating up Kratun, the police arrive and take all of the criminals prisoner. Ilda points out to them that they didn't take Lulu, and the policeman reveals that she had been working secretly for them and is not a criminal. Lulu then apologizes to Star for not being truthful and kisses him, leading Ilda to finally believe that they might be in love with one another after all.

Detective rating: Ilda does a good job of tracking down the Martians, but she went after Lulu based on no reason other than suspicion of any woman who wished to date Star. 5 on a scale of 1 to 10.
