Who Saved the Earth?

Writer: Gardner Fox

Penciller: Sid Greene

Inker: Sid Greene

Synopsis: Scattered across the galaxy, Rick Purvis, Karel Sorensen and Homer Glint each receive word that they have won Earth's space-hero medal for saving the Earth. Each one has no idea what they might have done that saved the Earth. They talk to each other about the only remarkable thing they had done recently. Rick tells his story about how he had been racing solar sailboats when his metal sail got hit by a meteor. He landed on the desert moon Akka and found a metal object with which to repair his sail, but as soon as he had done so, some aliens shot at him. He ran from them, but was weaponless and couldn't fight them, until he remembered a trick with indirect attacking that Karel had told him about. Using a similar tactic, he knocked out the aliens, rejoined the race and won it. As he completes his story, a voice comes over his radio and tells him that the metal object had been a weapon that those aliens, the Riffians, were going to use to place Earth in a no-time continuum, so by cutting it for use in his sail, he saved Earth. Karel then tells of how she went to a Spican planet to practice her target-shooting. she had found exploding flowers that caused teardrop-shaped seeds to fly into the air and decided that they would make good practice targets, but when she hit one, it let out a blinding light. She rigged herself a pair of smoked glasses and continued her practice, but while she was reloading, some Shenn aliens fired explosive bubbles at her. Remembering something Homer told her about a certain animal which freezes up when hit with bright light, she shot more of the teardrops, blinding the aliens and allowing her to get away. Word then comes over the radio that the teardrops were a Shenn invention that would have pulled Earth out of its orbit had she not destroyed them, thus saving the Earth. Homer then relates his story, in which he went searching for a tigerrog egg on a Rigellian planet, in a dangerous area filled with lava flows and rings of smoke. Homer had carefully circumvented the dangers and found the egg, but as soon as he picked it up, Kartivian aliens started shooting at him. The only way he could reach his ship quickly enough to escape would be to cross the dangerous ground, which he manages to do thanks to some track-and-field tricks that Rick had once taught him. As he finishes, the voice over the radio informs them that under the tigerrog nest, there was a Kartivian device that would have exploded Earth if it would have been exposed to enough of the tigerrog egg's radiation, so by taking the egg, Homer had saved the Earth. A few days later, when the Star Rovers are given their medals, each of them remembers how one of the others had saved him or her during the Earth-saving adventure. Rick decides that Karel deserves his medal, Karel decides that Homer deserves hers, and Homer decides that Rick should get his. They make the exchanges and agree that everything is now perfect.
