Petropavlovsk is the oldest city in the Far East of Russia.
We celebrated its anniversary of 260 in 2000.
The city was founded in 1740 by Russian navigator Ivan Yelagin, who participated
in the Second Kamchatka Expedition under direction of well known Russian commander Vitus Bering. At the beginning it was only outpost at the Far East of Russia.
It was hardly believed the total population of the town in 1900 was 383 persons and only in 20 century the city grew quickly and now it consist of over 200.000. Today Petropavlovsk is a modern industrial and cultural center and one of biggest port of the Far East.
