Elizabeth Wilson quietly opened the door to the townhouse and slipped inside, carefully closing and locking it behind her.  When one of the other doctors had called in sick, she had been forced to work a few extra hours in the ER.  Unless Gil was caught up in a big case, he would be home already - probably asleep.  She didn't want to wake him.

She quietly crossed the living area to their bedroom.  There he was, asleep in their bed.  The covers were down around his waist, revealing his muscled chest and arms.  His face was relaxed, turned toward the doorway as if he'd been watching for her when he fell asleep.  She smiled, still unable to believe that she'd known this man for so long before truly seeing him.

She carefully got undressed, thinking back to their first meeting - when they were both teenagers, UCLA freshman.  She was one of a handful of girls in the biology class, and the others had already paired off with each other for the lab.  All of the guys were already working with partners, leaving Elizabeth to do the experiment on her own.  Then he had come in, late to class, drawing the frowning disapproval of the teacher and an imperious finger pointing in Elizabeth's direction.  She watched him as he walked across the classroom to her.  He was cute; she'd give him that.  Jeans, sneakers, and a blue shirt that made his eyes stand out.  But it was the grin he'd given her had made her think of a little kid.  She couldn't help but grin back.

"Hi.  Gil Grissom."

"Elizabeth Wilson.  Guess we're lab partners, huh?"

"Guess so.  Hope you don't mind."

She shook her head.  "No, but you can finish the rest of this since I started it," she said with her sweetest smile.  He'd been a bit taken aback, but tackled the project with enthusiasm.

"So, can I ask why you were late?"

He looked up from the lab equipment with a gleam in his blue eyes.  "I saw an interesting spider web on the way to class and wanted to see what kind of spider made it."

Elizabeth laughed softly, shaking her head.  She'd figured he, like most other freshman guys on campus, had been girl-watching and lost track of time.  He raised an eyebrow at her, but she didn't tell him what she was thinking - that he was a geek, albeit a cute one.

Back in their bedroom, Elizabeth smiled in memory.  Despite having to be partners, they'd grown to be friends.  His love of spiders and bugs had made him a fascinating person to hang out with, and he put up with her interest in medicine.  They dragged each other to lectures on their pet subjects, signed up for as many lab classes together as they could to be partners again, and tried to gross each other out with practical jokes.   Elizabeth's girlfriends didn't understand what she saw in Gil - and really didn't understand the whole "we’re just friends" thing.  To them, there was only one reason a guy and girl hung out together so much - sex.  But Gil had never once made anything resembling a pass at her, and Elizabeth enjoyed being able to relax in his company without worrying about giving off the wrong messages.  Basically, they were a couple of science nerds who became good friends.

Elizabeth slipped under the covers and propped her head on her hand, watching Gil sleep.  Though they hadn't seen each other since graduation, he'd been his same sweet self when she'd shown up on his doorstep several months ago, needing a place to stay for the night after the hotel had screwed up her reservation.  Nervous about seeing him for the first time in years, she'd managed to find a box of chocolate covered grasshoppers as a shameless bribe.  She needn't have worried.

Still, something had changed between them.  When she'd looked at him that night, she'd really seen him as a man - an attractive, charming man.  She had been a little nervous that night when he'd shown her to his spare room.  For the first time since they'd met, she wanted him to make a pass at her.  When he had, she realized he was just as nervous about this change in their relationship as she was.

She reached out with a finger to trace the cleft in his chin.  Becoming lovers hadn't changed their friendship.  It seemed natural that it would happen, and Elizabeth adored being with this wonderful man who could always make her smile, even after the darkest day at work.  She knew he felt the same way about her when he came home after a tough night - his whole face would light up when she saw her.  A friend from the hospital once said that Gil looked at Elizabeth with an expression that said, "This is the most beautiful woman in the world," and "How the hell did I get so lucky as to have her fall for me?".  Elizabeth had just laughed, because she knew she felt the same way.

"What are you thinking about?"

His voice, husky from sleep, brought her back to the room and she smiled at the look in his eyes.  She moved closer, laying her head on his chest and snuggling up next to him.  "I was just thinking how lucky I am to be here with you, and how much I love you."

He brought his arms up around her and stroked her hair.  "I love you too."

Elizabeth sighed, and they both fell asleep in each other's arms.
