1963 THUNDERBIRD SPORTS ROADSTER
Complete Rotisserie Restoration
in progress now

April 21,
I got the flip sides primed and colored.
I used Omni Acrylic Enamel (by PPG) with hardener for the paint here
on the undersides. In the next day or two I'll paint the firewall
and bottom of the car black, again using OAE.
Before I flip these parts back over to finish the top sides, I'll
mask off the areas that are painted so I don't get any overspray
on them from the finishing operation. Before I paint the top sides
I'll spray a check coat of a contrasting color primer on everything
and block sand it with 180 grit paper. The darker primer will be
left out of reach of the sanding block in any dips or depressions
and will make them easy to find so I can fix them before the
color and clear goes on. Likewise, any high spots will be cut down.
A final coat of primer will be needed before the color, and will be
wet sanded with 500 or 600 grit. Use 2 coats if you did any additional
filler work.
Then all the panels should to be washed and rinsed with water
followed by a wipe down with a "Paint Prep" cleaning solvent
and finally wiped with a "tack" rag just before spraying.
The tack rag is also used between coats of base and just before
spraying the clear. DO NOT tack off the clear.
I guess I'm getting a little ahead of myself here so I'll let it
go for now.
