All songs were recorded as part of the Festival of Literature and Arts in
Hay-on-Wye on May 28, 1999. All songs on Disc One were recorded at the early show,
while Discs Two and Three were recorded at the late show.
Notes:
This is reported to be "a new 3 CD-R set from Doberman Records, that will
contain the complete performances gave at the Hay-on-Wye Festival of Literature
and Arts on May 28, 1999. These were really good sets, with Van at his most good
natured and talkative, with lots of nice performances. All tracks are taken
from the best available digital audience recordings."
Review:
In terms of sound, it's one of the best Doberman recordings, with
none of the distortion in the high notes that I've occasionally found (purely
in terms of sound, A Night In Oxford might be
the best of the Doberman efforts.)
Only three numbers from the first show are repeated in the second and Van
sings "Moondance" so differently the second time that it's fun to listen to
the two versions back-to-back. Van's voice is so supple throughout. Over the
course of the evening he ranges in mood from the ecstatic to playful.
He does (I count) eight songs from Back On Top
and I'd say each of them has grown since its initial recording, particularly
"The Philosopher's Stone." There are the rarities at the end when Van discovers
that there is no curfew. The first show is great, but if I had to chose, it'd be
the second show, easily ... but I refuse to choose: I want all of the 3+ hours
of pleasure. I place it firmly among the top live recorded performances.
(This boot seems to have been the seed for the Hay-on-Wye
CDR tree)
