Ketchikan Outdoor Recreation and Trails Coalition

2001 Activities

We sponsored several hikes in 2001.

Saturday, May 12. First Waterfall Creek. A small but enthusiastic group enjoyed this hike. Storyteller Harold (left) holds (L-R:) Queta, Jim, and Danny spellbound. Photo by Dave.

Sunday, May 27. Lunch Creek. Again, we had a small but enthusiastic group. And again, it turned into a bit of an adventure. The group did find time to work on their yoga poses, however. L-R: Dave, Mary Jo, Asics (doing "Down Dog"), Tom, Becki. Photo by Harold.

Saturday, June 2. We helped celebrate National Trails Day with the Forest Service and Parks & Recreation. After the potluck/bbq and award presentations, a few of us hiked up the Perseverance Lake trail to the first part of the Minerva trail, currently under construction. Becki points out a point of interest to (L-R:) Diane, Jim, and Tom. Photo by Dave.

Saturday/Sunday, June 9 & 10. Kayak/Boat trip to Black Sands Beach. It seems like it wouldn't be a true KORTC outing if we didn't get "temporarily misplaced" at some point. Wind, rain, poor visibility, and rough seas made for a challenging crossing from Mountain Point to Black Sands Beach for six intrepid kayakers. The survivors: (L-R) Dave, Harold, Jim, Judy, Julie, and Becki. Others joined us later in the day, some by boat, some by kayak, and some of us stayed overnight at Black Sands Beach, enjoying a nice, calm crossing on Sunday.

Saturday/Sunday, June 30 & July 1. Kayak/Boat trip to Naha Bay, hike to Heckman Lake cabin. Only one person was tough enough to kayak from Settler's Cove to Naha Bay. Only one man was man enough to hike from Naha six miles to Heckman Lake. Actually, only Activity Coordinator/Webmaster Dave would be cheap enough to make the trip by himself rather than waste $35. Saturday's weather was perfect, with sunny skies and calm water all the way. The return kayak trip was a little more challenging.

Saturday, July 14. Deer Mountain. KORTC and the Forest Service co-sponsored this hike with Parks and Recreation. Ten hikers braved occasional showers and drizzle to enjoy this hike. Nathan, Ed, Lee, and John made it all the way to the top. L-R, front: Lois, Sam, Teddy, Katherine. Back: Lee, Ed, Amy, Nathan, John, Dave.

Saturday, July 21. Dude Mountain. Originally this was going to be a boat trip to Smuggler's Cove, but no one who has a boat wanted to go. So Dave (left) and Harold hiked to the top of Dude Mountain on a beautiful sunny day.

Saturday/Sunday, September 1 & 2. Dude Mountain. The report from Harold: Two hardcore hikers, Dave Lieben and Harold Adams, in their serious raingear made the trek up Dude Mtn. over the stormy Labor Day Weekend. Harold settled into a relaxed, cozy camp for an overnighter. Toward evening, however, on a security check, he made an eye-opening discovery. A large animal's den was just a little too close to camp. The animal wasn't there yet, but its black fur was. All hands voted to beat an exit. Oh well, there's always next summer.
