Ketchikan Outdoor Recreation and Trails Coalition
2004 Activities:
We sponsored several hikes and kayak/boat trips again in 2004.
Sunday, May 16.
First Waterfall Trail. Our first trip of the year was a great one. Five people
and a dog enjoyed this hike. L-R: Steve, Maggie (dog), MJ, Heidi, Sara. Photo by Dave.
Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, May 29-31.
Carroll Inlet kayak trip. Nasty weather on Saturday caused this to be
shortened to a two-day trip, and only Kiki was brave enough to join Dave for
Sunday and Monday. The conditions were sometimes challenging for someone
kayaking on open water for the first time, but Kiki's good spirits never waned.
Saturday, June 5.
National Trails Day. The report and photo from Harold:
Many people turned out for the Settlers Cove trails dedications.
After cutting the invisible ribbon at the wheelchair accessible Ceder
Hollow trail, we beachcombed on an especially low tide with our Ak State
Parks mover, shaker, and interpreter, Mary Kowalczyk. Then we moved
up to the completed section of the Lunch Creek trail to the sandy beach.
Both trails are excellently done, and are exceptional additions
to Settler's Cove State Park.
Sunday, June 6.
Ward Creek Dayhike. Co-sponsosred by Parks and Recreation.
A light rain didn't stop (L-R:) Dave, Sara, Danny, Florentina, Marie,
and Nichole (I forget the dog's name) from enjoying a stroll on this
new trail. Photo by Harold.
Saturday, June 19. Marguerite Bay Boat Trip. The report
and photo from Harold:
What a great day for a boat trip and hike. After docking
in Traitors Cove, eight of us - Mary Jane, Kiki, Mary Jo,
Charlotte, Diane, Roy, Jim, and Harold - hiked to the Margaret
Creek bear viewing platform. We hung out there; swimming a
little, eating a little, and exploring the waterfall. Roy
befriended a big fat toad. Then we moved on to Margaret Lake.
Jim caught 3 trout over 12" among many others, MJ and Charlotte
did some watercolors, and the rest of us waded and explored
the shallow grassy end of the beautiful lake. A great trip.
Saturday and Sunday, July 3 & 4.
Blank Islands Kayak day/overnight.
The report from Harold:
The trip to the Blank Islands was 2 1/2 hours over because
of some exciting surfing, and 1 1/2 hours back in almost
calm seas. "Our" beach was taken, so we had to find
one on the rocky side of the island, which turned out to be
even better. We had the sun on our side and a little grotto like
sandy beach in which to set up camp. Shorts temperatures
and no bugs made for a leisurely afternoon of exploring: and
an evening of kicking back with MJ's secret
Steve Cannon homemade soup, cheese, and hot chocolate,
while watching the
sun settle behind the mountains. MJ Turek and Harold had the pleasure.
Saturday and Sunday, July 17 & 18.
Minerva Mountain hike. We had quite a turnout for this hike. We were
joined by some members of the Ketchikan Ladies Hiking group. Participants
included Harold, Sher, Sandra, Melissa, Meredith, Sheila, Vic, Carolyn,
Laura, Barb, Sara, Lee, Ann, Shelley, MJ, Dave, Danny, Kiki, Sara, Jackie,
Charlotte, and various dogs.
Some hiked to Perseverence Lake and went for a swim,
some hiked to the end of the boardwalk on the beautiful new
Minerva Mountain Trail,
and some hiked to the top of Minerva Mountain and down the other side.
The weather was mostly sunny with a few brief showers. Photos by Harold.
Saturday, July 31.
Harriet Hunt Kayak. Kayakers and canoers reported having a great
time on this trip, and enjoyed great weather. This photo shows
MJ Cadle doing navasana (boat pose) in her kayak.
Saturday, August 14.
Deer Mountain. Our co-sponsor Parks and Recreation did
a great job on publicity, and the weather was beautiful, leading to
an excellent turnout for this annual hike.
Everybody found their own pace, some made it to the one-mile lookout,
some to the two-mile lookout, and some all the way to the top.
