Hiragana: M's Y's and R's

All rows past the H row do not take voice marks.

M row

The Y row is a bit odd. There are no sounds for "yi" or "ye." These sounds simply don't exist in Japanese. Actually, "yi" never existed and "ye" was lost before hiragana was created, so there is no kana for it. These three characters are also very useful because you can make more complicated sounds with them which will be explained in a later lesson.

Y row

The R row is pretty straight forward. Remember though that the R sound is different in Japanese. This is one of the hardest sounds in the language. I explain it in my Basic Sounds lessons
