Transactions Year 1 (2002) |
Boston Trades: Pedro Martinez, Shea Hillenbrand, and 2nd round pick (pick #18) (CC Sabathia) Houston Trades: Roy Oswalt, Jeff Bagwell, 2nd round pick (pick #27) (Brad Penny) and 8th round pick (pick #111) (Benjie Molina) Commentary: (9/7/06): I really was a big believer in Oswalt and Bagwell really helped me that first year in the league. Boston Trades: FA rights to Hideo Nomo, Dante Bichette, and John Valentine Kansas City Trades: $700,000 Commentary (9/7/06): I didn't know what money was worth at the beginning of the first year, plus I figured FA would heavily inflate everybody's prices... Since at that time Nomo was still a good pitcher him alone should have given me a lot more then 700 k, but oh well. Boston Trades: rights to Chris Stynes and Micheal Coleman Kansas City Trades: $700,000 Commentary: I traded nothing for 700k. Can't beat that! Boston Trades: minor league picks round 1-8, 2nd round pick (pick #27) (Brad Penny) and $1,000,000 Toronto Trades: 2nd round pick (pick #17) (Eric Chavez) and 3rd round pick (pick #31) (Jeff Weaver) Commentary: (9/7/06)...I really can't believe I was this stupid back then... DUMB DUMB DUMB. Hurt my farm system by not taking part in the amateur draft and I even had to give up money in the deal. WHAT WAS I THINKING? Boston Trades: Manny Ramirez, 1.3 million dollars White Sox Trade: Jon Garland, Kip Wells, Carlos Lee, Bob Howry, 4th round pick (pick #52) (Jeff Kent) Commentary: (9/7/06) One of the few times in the first year I actually got an amazing deal I think... I mean Jeff Kent was a throw-in. How can you beat that? Boston Trades: 3rd Round Pick (#32), (Cristian Guzman) 4th round pick (#46) (Jose Vidro) Arizona Trades: Juan Pierre, $925,000 Commentary: (9/7/06): For years I've regretted this trade since I gave up two pretty high picks for a one dimensional player like Pierre. Then I looked at what was picked with those picks and if I look at it as trading Guzman and Vidro for Pierre, then it doesn't look that bad.. still with the players available at those picks I still have a tinge of regret. Boston Trades: Brian Daubach, $965,000 Kansas City Trades: Jeff Suppan Commentary: (9/7/06) Looks like a great trade huh? Well I forgot I had Suppan and since he was a FA at the end of the year I lost him... so I traded 965 k for nothing. UGH Boston Trades: $975,000 Cubs Trade: Julian Taverez, Armando Rios, and Melvin Mora Commentary (9/9/06): Melvin Mora totally surpassed everybody's expectations... too bad I lost Taverez in FA soon afterward because he would have been useful for holds. Rather ironically I mainly did this deal for Rios. Boston Trades: Luis Garcia White Sox Trade: Joe McEwing CLAUSE: If Garcia hits 30 HR during one of his first two seasons than I receive 1 million dollars Commentary (9/7/06): Completely useless... Boston Trades: Frank Castillo and 1.35 million dollars Cubs Trade: Hideo Nomo Commentary: Way too much money involved for Nomo... I mean earlier in the year I traded him and Bichette for 700k.You notice I traded a LOT of money my first year, (and spent a lot of money in the non-drafted part of the original FA) by the beginning of 2003 I had the 2nd lowest salary cap. My strategy of trading money for players has switched a complete 180... Boston Trades: Kip Wells, Scott Hatteberg, and July's monthly pick (Manny Ravelo) Houston Trades: Brian Lawrence, and 500k Commentary: Wells and Lawrence were once well thought of young pitchers... WOW! Amazing huh? Boston Trades: Jose Hernandez White Sox Trade: Marcus Giles * Clause * Giles must play 120 games both of the next two seasons starting in 2003 or White Sox gives me 500k Applied Commentary: The perfect deal for Boston. Giles was a forgotten man who was having a terrible year, Hernandez was having a career year... I was taking a gamble when I made this deal but it sure did pay off. And hey! I got 500k more because of the clause! I traded: Nomar Garciaparra, 1 million D'backs Trade: Erubial Durazo, Christian Guzman, Jack Cust, and 2003 4th round amateur pick (Scott Baker?) Commentary: Why, oh why, didn't Guzman and Cust pan out? It's amazing that they had Nomar trading value back in 2002 isn't it? Durazo was a decent backup but this was a complete dud for me. How in the world though did Seattle get that 4th round pick? This is the first trade I've come to where a pick mysteriously got traded as I never do have a record of trading that pick for anything... Not sure where it went... |
