1997 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Shelf Bed

Here's the shelf bed in my 4Runner.  This works well with my storage shelf.  It allows two adults (or one adult and two small kids) to sleep in the back of the truck with most of the large camping gear remaining under the shelf/bed.  The bed extension can be stored in the roof rack if the back seats are needed.

Entry and egress is a bit cramped and is most easily done from the front seat.  The front seat also serves as the changing area and shoe removal point if it's wet outside.  For ventilation I'll use some screen around the rear door, which will allow the rear window to be raised and lowered without fear of mosquitos.

To start out, I cut a sheet of 3/4" plywood to size:  around 43"x45".  The I made three mounting plates and bolted it to the board.  Next I sacrified two tie-down straps and bolted them to the board.  The straps loop over the front seat head rests and are adjustable.  The rear of the board is held to the shelf by the mounting plates and two cotter pins.

Next on the list is the roof top tent.  :)
