People often call
St.Petersburg North Palmira or Northern Venice because of it’s exceptional
poetics and the great number of rivers and canals.
The basis of St.Petersburg attraction for tourists is it’s architectural
appearance. The ensembles of embankments, avenues and squares are among the
masterpieces of world architecture. There are more than 150 museums and 100
theatres in the city therefore it’s considered to be the ‘cultural capital’ of
the state.
Founded by emperor Peter the First in 1703 the city was the capital of Russia
for more than 200 years.
St.Petersburg is situated on 44 islands in Neva river's delta and is famous for
its miracle time of “White Nights” from May 25 to July 20.
During the season of White Nights St.Petersburg undoubtedly is the most
beautiful city in the world!
300 Anniversary
At
12 a. m., following the firing of the midday cannon on the Naryshkin Bastion
of the Peter and Paul Fortress, the main spectacle of the day will commence on
the aquatic arena in front of the Spit of St. Petersburg Island.
This will be watched - and, to a certain extent, participated in - by the President of Russia, heads of state and leaders of governments from Europe and the rest of the world, as will as members of the Russian Government and Parliament, the Governor of St. Petersburg, and members of the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly. This event will be broadcast to viewers all over the world.
During the course of one and a half hours
celebrated actors and artistes positioned on a floating stage will perform a
program representing the history of St. Petersburg.
On the embankments of the River Neva, in the centre of St. Petersburg, a parade of participating countries will be held. Each country will be allocated a section of the embankment on which to organize a mini-exhibition showing the history and culture of its region and its links with the history and culture of St. Petersburg and Russia.
The start of a theatrical show on the waters of
the River Neva will be marked by Peter the Great sailing past the river
embankments on a ship. Each delegation will greet the city's founder, and he,
for his part, will acknowledge his guests. This stage of the celebrations will
be broadcast in full to viewers all over the world.
In the Catherine Palace at Tsarskoe Selo, the
amazingly beautiful, intricately decorated Amber Room will re-open, following
a restoration that has lasted decades.
Decorated with artfully assembled pieces of various kinds of amber (including
unique amber pictures), the Amber Room was taken apart and carried off during
the Second World War. Restoration of the room lasted decades, involving
successive generations of restorers. Now at last this masterpiece of the age
of Catherine the Great can again be seen by citizens of St. Petersburg and
tourists from all over the world.
