Athens, Georgia

Athens is located about an hour plus south of Greenwood.

Courthouse

Cannon

The only double-barrel cannon in the world, it was a prototype that was fired once.
Since they couldn't precisely coordinate both barrels, the test was a major failure.

Courthouse

Tree

The marker under this tree reads: "For and in consideration of the great love I bear this tree and the great desire I have for its protection, for all time, I convey entire possession of itself and all land within eight feet of the tree on all sides. William H. Jackson"

The town of Athens deigned to recognize this unique bequest and never levied any taxes on the tree. When the original tree died c. 1943, the good ladies of the town planted a seedling of the original to continue the tradition. It is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as "the only tree to own itself".
