Positano is perched on a mountain-side that plunges into the Mediterranean,
and is the highlight of the Almalfi Coast.
- Location
- The Almalfi Coast lies half way down the west Italian coast, just south of Naples.
- Recommended Activities
- There are magnificent Mediterranean views on the hiking trails around the coastal mountains.
If hiking is not your thing, get hold of a car/bike and drive/ride the length between Sorrento and Salerno.
A swim on the beach at Positano is a must. Dinner on the beach or an adjoining restaurant assures prime position
to watch the sunset, or even the moon rise. If that is not enough, Pompei, Sorrento and the Isle of Capri are
just around the corner. Sorrento is another very beautiful spot.
- When
- Almalfi and especially Positano are popular in the summer, so either side peak is perfect and a bit cooler.
You will incur less crowds in the months of May, June, September. However if crowds are your thing,
you will surely find them in July and August.
- Accomodation
- There are hostels at Positano and Sorrento etc. Hotels are everywhere.
Shoe-stringers should note that even hostels are expensive in Positano. There are a considerable number of camp grounds
and even caravan parks just away from the popular spots where you will truly save money.
- Transport
- Due to the mountainous coastline there are only 2 main entry points. There are multiple modes of transport to
Sorrento on the western end of the Almalfi Coast, and Salerno on the eastern end. From these destinations bus is the
only form of public transport along the coast. If you are driving/riding beware of oncoming traffic/buses on the extremely
narrow and winding road.
