The Great Barrier Reef near Cairns.
- Location
- Tropical Cairns lies on the North East coast of Australia, in the state of Queensland.
- Recommended Activities
- Seeing the Great Barrier Reef - Dive the outer reef or snorkel the fringe reefs. There are a multitude of
opportunties here. It is the perfect place to become a certified diver. At Green Island you can see the reef without
getting your toes wet. Simply hop on a glass bottom boat tour.
- Hinterland - just inland from Cairns do a bungee jump which incorporates great views. Catch the train
to Kuranda and return via the cable-cars which give you a birds-eye view of the tropical rainforest.
- White Water Rafting - The Tully River has renowned rafting and can be done in a day if you are
in a hurry.
- Rainforest Exploring - Cairns is surrounded in lush rainforest, including pockets that have been
'frozen in time'. The Daintree National Park is World Heritage listed. Great hiking can be had on Hinchinbrook
Island and around Cape Tribulation but keep an eye out for the crocodiles.
- When
- The only time to go to Cairns in the winter between June and September, preferably July-August. Outside of this period
the daily tropical rain and very hot weather will restrict and frustrate.
- Accomodation
- Cairns is a very popular destination and has all sorts of accomodation. Hostels are very plentiful but many do not have
air conditioning which makes life much more comfortable in the warmer months.
- Transport
- Bus, train, scenic train from/to Kuranda, cable-car from/to Kuranda, transfers from/to the International Airport are
standard.
- Stay a while
- Due to the large amount of attractions, it is popular to stay a while and do a diving course and use Cairns as a
base to venture around. Short term accomodation (3 months rentals and the like) are available for those wishing to
hang around.
