Bloemfontein and Newcastle (S Sun 20/03/2001)

Although it is near the end of the swimming season, Tray Bang swimmers are still doing the club proud. This weekend, Kelly Bester, Simon Bothma, Wesley Gilchrist and Chris Walthew took part in the Level 3 gala in Bloemfontein. Against some really tough competition, Wesley made it into the top ten for 100m backstroke. We wish them luck for the rest of the competiton, which ends on Wednesday.

Well done to the swimmers who took part in the Level 2 gala held recently in Newcastle. The club was placed third overall and the following medals were won:

Stacy Jansen - gold in 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke; silver in 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 100m butterfly

Jacques Venter - gold in 100m freestyle and bronze in 20m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke

Jamie-Lee Fisher - gold in 50m freestyle and silver in 100m freestyle

Cherilyn Rall - gold in 100m freestyle and silver in 200m freestyle

Cindy Curia - bronze in 50m backstroke

Finalists in various events were Megan Anticevich, Tara-Lyn Beets, Lyn McFarland, Justin Kemp, Sean Morgan, Daniel Wexler, Rowan Morrison and Tammy Gilchrist.

The relay teams won a silver and a bronze.

Kelly Bester, Cindy Curia, Michelle Curia, Wesley Gilchrist and Simon Bothma were selected to swim for KZN Primary Schools, while Stacy Jansen and Jacques Venter made the High Schools' team. Michelle Curia, Donovan Ribi and Daniel King took part in the SA Development Championships held in East London.

A number of Tray Bang swimmers will be going on tour to Australia later this year. They are trying to raise funds for this exciting venture and to this end a Swim-a-thon will be held at Mowat Park High School's pool on 1 April at 14:00.

The club will be holding its championships on Saturday, 24 March at the Alex Bulley pool. We are looking forward to lots of parent support on that day. The long distance swims will be held at Mowat Park pool on 31 March.

The AGM for 2001 will take place at Impact Christian Academy on 31 April at 15:00. At this event the swimmers will be awarded prizes, trophies and badges. The prize-giving will be immediately after the AGM, followed by a bring and braai.

Level 1 Championships (SS 23/01/01)

The Tray Bang swimmers did the club proud at the level 1 Swimming Championships held at King's Park over the weekend. The following swimmers came home with medals:
 
Tammy Gilchrist (10) - Gold (50m breaststroke)
Rowan Morrison (13) - Gold (50m freestyle,100m freestyle, 100m butterfly)
Daniel King (13) - Gold (100m freestyle), Silver (50m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly), Bronze (50m backstroke)
Ross Holloway (13) - Bronze (100m backstroke, 100m freestyle)
Selwyn Quaite (16) - Silver (200m freestyle), Bronze (50m backstroke)

Level 2/3 CHAMPIONSHIPS    (Southlands Sun - submitted 15 Jan 2001)

The KZN 2001 Level 2/3 Championships were held from 10-14 January. Three Tray Bang swimmers won medals and 10 were in the finals for their various events.

The medal winners were Simon Bothma who won two silvers (400m and 200m freestyle) and a bronze (100m freestyle), Wesley Gilchrist who won three silvers (50m butterfly and  50m and 100m backstroke) and Pamela Buchly (50m breaststroke). Pamela  also qualified for the Senior Nationals, to be held in Germiston in March. This is a great achievement and she is to be congratulated.

Other swimmers who did very well, qualifying for finals at the KZN Championships, were: 

11 years 
Kelly Bester (50m and 100m freestyle, 50m and 100m backstroke)

12-13 years
 Sean Morgan (50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, 50m and 100m freestyle)
 Cherilyn Rall (100m and 200m freestyle)
Chris Walthew (100m backstroke)

14-15 years
Jacqui Stewart (50m and 100m breaststroke)

Open
Lyn McFarland (200m backstroke).

In the Swimming Rankings for January 2001, the following swimmers have been placed in the top 20 in South Africa for various events: Pamela Buchly, Jacqui Stewart, Chris Walthew, Daniel Wexler, Wesley Gilchrist and Simon Bothma.

Westville Sprints Results

The Tray bang swimmers did very well at the TYR Westville Sprints held recently at King's Park swimming pool. The club was placed tenth making it one of the top clubs at the swim meet. There were 4 medal winners. Pamela Buchly and Wesley Gilchrist both won silver medals while Chris and Natalie Walthew won bronze medals.

The following swimmers were placed in the top ten for various events:

Pamela Buchly, Lyn McFarland, Jacqui Stewart, Stacy Jansen, Sean Morgan, Cindy Curia, Cherilyn Rall, Daniel Wexler, Chris Walthew, Kelly Bester, Simon Bothma and Natalie Walthew.

5 Provinces Gala

Congratulations to Daniel Wexler and Chris Walthew who took part in the 5 provinces Gala in Ladysmith on Saturday. Danial came home with a gold medal which he won in the medley relay.

Messages to Swimmers

7 November 2000 from KZN Regional Records Officer ;KwaZulu-Natal Swim Board :

Could all Clubs please inform all their swimmers / Club members that Age Group Gala's will be of a long duration for the rest of the season due to the amount of swimmers that enter these gala's. There is not much that we can do this season but the problem will be addressed next season so please make sure that everyone comes prepared for the day.
