History:
Nova Grey was born to parents Bethany and Xavier in a small town called Red Bank, New Jersey. As a child, Nova did not make friends easily. Her father was quite strict and somewhat abusive. It just seemed easier not socializing as opposed to making friends and trying to endlessly explain her way around the bruises she often had and several broken bones she seemed to suffer quite often. Although her father needed help to work through his problems, he did indeed love both his wife and child. During Nova’s seventh year, her mother, who had been suffering much like her daughter from numerous physical wounds and to greater degree mental ones, died tragically and unexpectedly. (Bethany committed suicide and was found by the seven-year-old Nova hanging in her bathroom... this is mostly what attributes to the recurring nightmares that Nova suffers.) Feeling wholly to blame for his wife’s death, Xavier ended up putting a phaser to his head and proceeded to pull the trigger. Nova missed her mother a great deal but felt no particular loss at her father’s passing. Sadly at her young age, nova had not much of a chance to have a normal childhood or even the desire to do the sort of things that normal children do... she indeed grew up quickly and after the passing of her parents was forced to do so even more rapidly. Her grandmother on her mother's side then took her in. After successfully blocking out most of the horrible imagery, or more aptly the feelings that the images caused, of her past she then proceeded to run from all of the problems by over occupying her mind with school and numerous extra curricular activities. However, it seemed that as she consciously repressed her emotions, she became more aware of the emotions of others. In avoidance of her true thoughts and feelings, she then started to inadvertently feel what others felt. Although quite disturbing, she found it easier to deal with other’s misery as opposed to her own.

Living with her grandmother provided Nova with an opportunity to save most of the money that she had received for birthdays, for odd jobs she had done as a youth and other things of the sort. As she spent time at her grandmother’s, she tried her best to come up with a way to spend her years after her schooling was over. For weeks after her parents’ death, she would sit on her grandmother’s roof and contemplate her choices. She thought of trying her hand at acting. She thought of singing. She thought of trying to get some of her poetry published. However, all of these things seemed most unrealistic to her therefore none were even attempted. All this time staring at the night sky made Nova extend her thoughts to the stars... thusly, she came up with an excellent career opportunity... StarFleet. Once Nova was sure that this was the correct decision, she set out to take the Academy entrance exams, which she passed with flying colours. Taking and passing the tests was easy enough. Her admission to Starfleet Academy, however, had to be approved, re-approved and approved again. Total waiting time for admission was two months. Possibly the longest two months of Nova's life. The waiting, however, finally paid off. She spent most of her time studying. She did not interact with many other cadets. Needless to say, most of the other cadets thought she was some sort of crazy recluse and she never gained any sort of popularity. Nova never really needed anyone, however being shunned by one's peers is never easy, even if it was easier after sometime to just avoid everyone. It was easier not having to feel any emotion, whether it be her’s or anyone else’s. While she always kept her tough exterior, there was a lot more on her mind than she let on or perhaps even more than she realized herself. Eventually the headaches came back and insomnia set in. She recalled having headaches after her mother's death, but for a while, they had ceased. Insomnia however, was something she was familiar with, so that did not bother her so much. However, the headaches did bother her. Now they had returned with a vengeance. Quite possibly, years the years of pent up thoughts and emotions of her own and then the habit of trying to block out others had caught up with her. Whatever the cause was, Nova kept the pain to herself, much like everything in her life.

Nova made it through Starfleet Academy, headaches and all, with no real hang-ups, aside from the fact that her social skills were practically non-existent.
