The damned things are frustrating, but they can be great tools that can actually save time and make your life more fulfilling if they are properly configured.
A great source of information is Computers.com. I also get a lot of my software from Download.com. (Yes, I am partial to the work done by CNET!) I use Hotbot as my search engine because it indexes the most websites, and allows me to easily search for sites CONTAINING ALL WORDS, which keeps me from finding a lot of garbage.
