Standing Rules
of Order

The following guidelines are the expectations of Trident behavior required to reach our goals as a community.  It is an agreement on acceptable behavior between brothers and sisters.  These expectations are concepts that are qualitative.  These Guidelines are a measure of us as ladies and gentlemen.  Conduct is not to be confused with a Member in Good Standing.  The status of Member in Good Standing is well defined and quantitative in the Executive Orders.  One who loses status as a Member in Good Standing may be disciplined by censure, probation, or termination.  Since one of our objectives is social activity, it is the intent of these Guidelines to ensure a good time for all participants.  The Guidelines are not an attempt to restrict an individual’s personal life or choices, but they do give reason for concerned brothers and sisters to intervene in the manner consistent with a loving family. However, egregious or flagrant disregard for this Code of Conduct may be cause for disciplinary action.

A. Alcohol Use.  The consequences of alcohol overuse are not always legal, nor are the effects inebriation always acceptable to society.  Trident, Indianapolis  cannot allow overuse of alcohol to be an excuse for behavior that is destructive, disruptive, or abusive.  When a member has responsibilities to discharge, the use of alcohol must be tempered until such duties are completed.  Action must be taken in situations where a brother or sister has imbibed more than is legal or safe. We have a moral obligation to prevent him or her from driving drunk, to stop him or her from injury to self or others, and to intervene in situations where our brother or sister may hurtfully be taken advantage of. There are times when alcohol becomes a problem; therefore, we recognize that there are times when we must utilize tough love.

B. Drug Use/Abuse.  The use of illegal drugs is unacceptable.  Specifically, the use or possession of illegal drugs is not permitted at any Trident International Indianapolis  function, at our home bar or host facility, at any out-of-town function or run.  The issues are legality and club reputation.  Drug use away from the club is a personal choice that cannot be restricted in this forum.  However, when the choice to use illegal drugs affects the normal functioning and good name of the club, it becomes a matter for club scrutiny. A member’s dependency on illegal drugs deprives the club of the whole person and his or her ability to contribute fully.

C. Illegal Activities. Intentional, deliberate, and flagrant disrespect for the laws of the community, state, and country is unacceptable.  A member is expected to be a generally law abiding citizen.

D. Unprovoked Physical Violence. While brawling can damage the reputation of the club, there are times when and situations where one must defend one’s physical person.  And, it is expected that other club members present act to protect their brother or sister, to remove their brother or sister to safety, and to contact the authorities if necessary.

E. Dishonesty. There are certain universal principles found in every society.  Lying, cheating, and stealing are abhorred universally.  These characteristics are hurtful to our community where you are loved and trusted as a brother or sister.  Dishonesty cannot be tolerated.

F. Respect/Acceptance. Robert’s Rules of Order are parliamentarian tools by which we govern meetings.  However, as brothers and sisters, we strive to respect each other, to listen to differing opinions, and to keep an open mind during discussion. Therefore, shouting matches during meetings and harsh words can never be allowed to take the place of healthy orderly debate.

G. Goals.  We work together for the common good and to accomplish our goals.  We must try not to be sensitive to doing more than our fair share.  Conversely, we must not slack in doing what is required from us.  Rather, all should seek those tasks for which we are best suited, even if those tasks are not fun.  And, each should strive to be of assistance to a brother or sister.  The goal of the club is paramount.

H. Sensitivity. As a community of brothers and sisters, we are sensitive to the needs of each other.  We do not label each other or undermine the dignity of another brother or sister.  Rather, we uphold each other’s rights.  When one has a problem or an issue with another club member, one must go to other to work it out.  The member who is approached regarding a problem is urged to remain open to the feedback from the other.  The club will not intervene unless the problem or issue interferes with club morale or goals.

I. Confidentiality. We do not discuss club business or members’ personalities in public or in font of non-members.  We do not “air our dirty laundry”.  All families fight, so when we fight, we fight like a family—preferably without employing sharp implements.

J. Courtesy to Hosts. Whether at the home of a club member or in a venue governed by another club, it is expected that we respect the house rules and property.  We are good guests, so we park correctly and are as unobtrusive as possible.

K. Public Play/Sex. On runs or in certain bars, there may be designated areas for fetish play or sex.  We encourage expressions of fetishes and celebrate our sexuality.  The watchwords for these encounters are safe, sane, and consensual. We respect our bodies and the community, so in the public eye we dress in accordance to state and municipal laws. We respect our colors and hold them dear, so we do not sexually act out in public venues or engage in fetish play while wearing them.  However, in bars or on runs, we do not leave our colors unattended.

L. Mutual Aid. As a community of brothers and sisters, we are committed to each other in a unique way.  Therefore, we agree to come to aid of a brother or sister in need.  If one is in trouble, we all intervene.  In all things, we endeavor to stand shoulder to shoulder.  A solid united front is essential.  And, above all, leave no Trident behind.
