"Evangelical" means "relating to the Christian Gospel", and the Lutheran doctrine adheres as closely to the Word of God as is humanly possible.
Therefore Lutherans believe in their redemption by the grace of God, through the blood of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
All that is necessary for our salvation is to acknowledge our sinfulness and trust in God's promise that "whoever believes in Him (Jesus) shall not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)
The Holy Spirit comes to us through grace, the Word and the Sacraments.
He creates faith in those who hear the Gospel, when and where He wills.
We believe that we are a part of the universal Church - the Body of Christ - and seek to bring about unity by reaching out to other denominations, and joining them in interdenominational services.
Our worship is based on the Word of God, with specific Bible readings allocated for each Sunday.
These trace the earthly life of our Lord from Advent to Pentecost, and concentrate on various aspects of Christian life for the remainder of the year.
The liturgy is varied by the readings, hymns, prayers and the sermon.
The set readings may be altered at any time, or the liturgy set aside, at the discretion of the Pastor, if he or she wishes to conduct a service based on a special theme.
Our church contains a font, pulpit and altar, representing the threefold gift of the Lord: Baptism, the Word and the Lord's Supper. The altar carries a cross, as a sign of justice and mercy, and flowers to depict God as the Creator. An open Bible reminds us that Christ, the Word of God, became flesh, while candles symbolize Christ as the Light of the world.
Prominence is given to the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion.
Infants are baptised, making them members of the Family of God, just as they are members of their earthly families. At about the age of fourteen years, children chose for themselves to be a part of God's Family at their Confirmation.
In keeping with the custom of the early Church, all baptised Christians may partake of the Lord's Supper, when they receive the true Body and Blood of our Saviour.
Either wine or grape juice may be used at Communion.
The theme of our Diocese for the next few years is the developing of the Priesthood, or "Ministry of all Believers". Courses are held, and efforts made to discover the Spiritual Gifts of our people. Once these have been identified, they are given to opportunity, and encouraged to put their gifts into practise, for the building up of the Church and their own gratification.
Locally, our Church prays frequently for a Spiritual revival among our members.
