Mute Cute Girl was an unusual Sarah Slean "tribute" concert born out of a virus; Sarah's bout with viral laryngitis in January 2000. Completely unable to sing but unwilling to let her hometown fans down, she flashed the bat signal and Toronto's music community responded. The night of the show, a phenomenal group of musicians showed up with instruments and lyric sheets and loads of enthusiasm, but very little practice time (and none with Sarah and her band). They'd each independently picked one of Sarah's songs to sing, and shown up at the door with their selections - the show was literally cobbled together at the last minute. Unfortunately some of the singers picked the same songs and were unable to perform (although Oh Susanna and Leslie Feist adapted their solo renditions of Eliot into a duet), but the songs that were performed were absolutely magical.
