Obtaining 501-C-3 Tax Status

BSA is a non profit organization and is identified as having a 501-c-3 tax status.   There are benefits to a unit in having this status.  In some cases major employers will provide grants to 501-c-3 organizations.

While you will be using the 501-c-3 number from the BSA, you will need to obtain an EIN for your unit.  You will need work with the local Scout office to file form SS4 in order to obtain an EIN for your Scout unit.  This form can be obtained from http://ftp.fedworld.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fss4.pdf. There is also a publication that contains instructions.  You will want to refer to page 6 of publication 557.  This publication can be obtained from http://ftp.fedworld.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p557.pdf

Once the IRS has provided you with the Federal Employer Identification Number, you can apply for State Tax Exempt status.  This will benefit you by not having to pay Sales Taxes.  In the state of Florida, you will need to file form DR-5 which can be downloaded at http://www.myflorida.com/dor/forms/2000/00dr5.pdf.
