There are several "individual" Philmont programs for young people who have not attained age 21. Leadership is provided by Philmont. These programs include:

Rayado Trek

Older Scouts and Venturers (not coed crews - there are separate crews for males and females) who have mastered basic outdoors skills should consider applying for the challenging and selective Rayado Trek program. Rayado participants will experience more of Philmont's backcountry and will have program opportunities not available to Expedition campers. Rayado is unparalled for developing outdoor leadership, group dynamics, wilderness problem solving, and advanced outdoor skills. A Rayado trek encourages participants to attain a high level of personal growth and self-reliance.

Participants must be at least 15 years old by January 1 of the year of attendance, or have completed the 9th grade prior to participation, but not be 21 by its conclusion.

There are only two 20-day sessions each summer beginning around June 19 and ending about July 9 with another beginning around July 17 and ending about August 6. Cost for 2004 was $572.

Roving Outdoor Conservation School (R.O.C.S.)

The Roving Outdoor Conservation School is an exciting program for Scouts and Venturers who have an interest in conservation and natural resource management. As the crew hikes the ranch, the participants will camp in many of the different forest types and participate in activities in some of the following areas: forestry, fire ecology, fisheries management, wildlife management, geology, watershed management, and range management. The crew will spend six days building new trails and rebuilding some existing trails.

Participants must be at least 16 years old by the program start date, but not 21 by its conclusion.

There are eight 21-day sessions each summer starting weekly around June 10 and ending about August 19. Cost for 2004 was $350.

Ranch Hands

Ranch Hands is a program for Scouts and Venturers who have knowledge of horsemanship and horse care and want to expand their skills and experience. The Ranch Hand crew will spend eight days working in the horse department hauling hay, saddling, daily chores, and other horse program tasks. Then they will participate in their own special Cavalcade itinerary trek for eight days.

Participants must be at least 16 years old by the program start date, but not 21 by its conclusion.

There is only one 16-day session each summer beginning around July 7 and ending about July 23. There is no fee for this program.

Order of the Arrow Trail Crew

The Order of the Arrow is offering an opportunity for Arrowmen to join together in cheerful service and the formation of lasting brotherhood on the trails of Philmont. The first week focuses on trail construction and maintenance under the guidance of Philmont trail crew foremen. The second week is a seven day backpacking trek that is designed by the participants.

Participants must be at least 16 years old by the program start date, but not 21 by its conclusion.

There are six 14-day sessions each summer starting weekly around June 8 and ending about July 27. Cost for 2004 was $125.

There are also Mountain Men and Mountain Women treks for teenage children of people attending the Philmont Training Center. Typically, Mountain Trek crews travel 20-30 miles into the backcountry where participants stay at several camps that offer a variety of exciting programs. There is a fee for these programs.

In all cases the individual or his/her family must provide transportation to and from Philmont. For more information contact Philmont at 505-376-2281 or write to:
