Kansas
Troop 744
We are a junior troop with 13 girls. We are part of the Witchita Area GSC. Kansas is generally a plain sloping down to the east. The eastern part of the state is flat. We grow a lot of wheat here, and there are a lot of open plains for cattle to graze. Buffalo, once present in vast numbers, have almost vanished from the plains. The main rivers are the Missouri, the Kansas and the Arkansas rivers. Kansas' temperatures are warm to hot in the summer and cool to cold in the winter. Tornadoes happen frequently in the spring. Kansas Day is January 29. This is when Kansas was made part of the United States. Many famous people are from Kansas, Kristy Alley, Actress, Dennis Hopper, actorand Dwight D. Eisenhower, former president, Dorthy from the Wizard of Oz was from Kansas.
KANSAS STATE ANIMAL
Before the white man settled the buffalo provided the Indian with everything he needed-food, clothing, shelter. Hunted almost to extinction by the 1870's, the buffalo is making a comeback. Small herds are raised and protected, both by the state and by private individuals.
