Getting the job
While I was still working at DON a was talking to Brent Redmond Transportation Inc. (BRT)  They remembered me and they did have an open truck. They asked me to fax them a resume and an updated application. Five minutes after they received my fax, they called me on my cell phone and offered me a job.

My Job Description
When I started this time, it was Winter time and Yuma was going full swing. I knew that I could make allot of money really quick because BRT was going back and forth from Salinas to Yuma as fast as the truck could drive. It is 600 miles one way. We were so far in the hole, financially, I knew I could get us out. After a while Yuma slowed down and they had me doing the old multi pick ups and multi drops thing again. That kind of work is great for the owner of the truck (the Boss) but doesn't do muck for the driver.

He didn't pay enough per stop, to make it worth it. The first stop was free, no problem, but all of the other stops paid $9 each. It could take hours to do each stop. I remember one load that had 3 stops, and I was at one of those places for 10 hours. That is less than $1 an hour. If I could get stops done in less than 30 minutes you would not hear me complain. Unfortunatly, there are dozens of trucks in Yuma, Salinas, or any other produce center,  trying to get loaded and we all have to take our turns.

We would all have to first check in then listen on our CB radios for our number to be called. If we fall asleep and do not respond or come to the shipping area, we are passed by and when we check in again we are put at the end of the waiting list again. Then we get to the shipping dock and wait again. We could be at the dock for several more hours as they put our order together and load the product into the truck. Then we would have to go to the next shipper and do the whole thing over again. DO NOT HAUL PRODUCE...

The Good Points
I did make good money, the health benefits were good. The ladies in the office were very nice. They did, and still do have nice trucks and trailers.

The Bad Points
Woking 7 days a week and doing allot more free work. I did not like the multiple pick ups and multiple drop loads I was given. I did not expect, nor deserve special treatment. I just wanted to drive the truck and make money. When you are getting paid by the mile, you would want to spend more time on the highway. I spent most of my time at customers, backed into a dock for free.

Why I Stopped Working There.
On May 30, 2002, my supervisor, at Brent Redmond Transportation, fired me because I refused to work a 24 + hours shift without sleeping. This is against the law and very dangerous.     [More info]
