Activities

Pembrokeshire is a fantastic place for an activity-based holiday - even if it's raining and you are only visiting for two days!

At the very least we encourage you to take advantage of the plethora of beautiful beaches and castles and coastal walks of South Pembrokeshire - places such as Manorbier, Freshwater West, Stackpole and Barafundle are not to be missed. Coasteering in the area is also a must.

If you have more time and energy we strongly suggest you visit St David's and Solva, and the beaches of North Pembrokeshire. Finally, for those of you who prefer something more sedate, there are some excellent pubs in the area, and a few good places to eat.

Below is a short summary of information about activities in the region:

Katharine will be doing a beach and headland run at 0930 on Saturday 21st (meet in the carpark at Stackpole Quay, which is on the south coast a few miles from Pembroke). I will also be organising a Coasteering trip on Friday 20th August for those who are around. Details to be decided - please contact Katharine for more information on +44 (0) 7932448018

Patrick will be conducting a round of golf at Penally Golf Course which is just outside Tenby in Penally village, near the sea. Details to be decided - please contact Patrick for more information on +44 (0) 7739572885

If I tell you the food is good in Pembrokeshire, Patrick will probably divorce me. However, contrary to what many people believe, some good food can be found if you look hard enough

Boats & Climbing

Pembrokeshire is renowned for it's wonderful coastal sailing. With the biggest tidal range in the world, and many treacherous creaks and esturaries, the region presents a challenge for even seasoned sailors. Added to this there are several islands to visit in the area, such as the monastic Caldey Island near Tenby, and the nature reserves of Skomer, Skolkholm and Grassholm.

To rent a boat contact Dale Sailing (www.dale-sailing.co.uk) or to take a trip contact Shearwater Safaris (www.boatrides.co.uk). Caldey Island boats leave periodically from the harbour in Tenby (www.caldey-island.co.uk)

Other activities include Coasteering with Tyf No Limits Adventure (really fun and adventurous, including options to to surf, windsurf, kayak or canoe) (www.tyf.com) or sailing on the Cleddau River near Cresswell Quay with Pembrokeshire Watersports (www.pembrokeshire-watersports.co.uk).

If you would like to learn to dive (or if qualified they rent you kit) the West Wales Diving School (www.westwalesdivingschool.co.uk) is reputedly excellent. Some of the underwater scenery is wonderful, and we have Wales' first marine nature reserve around Skomer Island.

Climbers may already be familiar with some of the more famous coastal rock faces on the Pembrokeshire coast. Bosherston is a fine example. For more information read Visit Pembrokeshire (Climbing). Beginners wanting lessons can also contact Tyf or Preseli Ventures.

Beach

There are loads of great beaches in Pembrokeshire, and better still they regularly win awards as the cleanest in the UK. Some of the best are found in secluded coves that can only be reached by narrow, precipitous footpaths - so it's worthwhile exploring. Below we recommend some of the best beaches - but there are many more.

South Pembrokeshire: (For directions click here and highlight the purple sector on the map)

Manorbier (good for surfing, families, coastal paths, close to Manorbier castle)

Freshwater West (wild and beautiful, dangerous to swim, but still a surfing haven)

Barafundle (great for swimming, families and headland walks)

Bosherston (great for swimming)

West Pembrokeshire: (For directions click here and highlight the green sector on the map)

St Brides Bay (secluded, peaceful and reached by a lonely grassy track through the fields)

Marloes (Wild and beautiful, remote)

Nolton Haven (Quaint beach, popular with families)

North Pembrokeshire: (For directions click here and highlight the green sector on the map)

Whitesands (Near St Davids, stunning scenery out to the islands, fabulous headland walks)

Newport (Sociable, near Newport town which has pleasant cafes and restaurants)

Castles & Churches

Castles & Churches are abundant in the Pembrokeshire coastal region due to its rich historical and religious history. Once again we recommend a few. For further information on Castles see Visit Pembrokeshire (Castles) and for Churches see Visit Pembrokeshire (Churches).

Carew Castle, with a history dating back 2000 years, is a timeless favourite in South Pembrokeshire. Located near Cresswell Quay, in a tiny village with pub and ancient tidal mill, the area is very peaceful. Carew also contains one of the oldest crosses in the UK - the Carew Cross dates back to the 11th Century.

Manorbier Castle, birthplace of the infamous Geraldus Cambrensis, is a well preserved castle consisting of a 12th century gatehouse, a keep, two 13th century towers, and a vaulted chapel. The beautiful stonework and romantic setting earned the castle a place in the television adaptation of "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe".

Picton Castle was built in the 13th Century by Sir John Wogan and his descendants still occupy the Castle today, carrying the name of Philipps since the 15th Century. The Castle is still a home retaining its medieval features in the undercroft. The principal rooms were remodelled in the 1750s by Sir John Philipps the sixth Baronet, with plastered rooms and fireplaces by Sir Henry Cheere. There are 40 acres of Woodland Gardens, a shop, restaurant and an art gallery.

Pembroke Castle is located in the centre of Pembroke town and is one of the best castles to visit in Pembrokeshire. It is an imposing Norman castle dating back to the 13th century, on the banks of the River Cleddau. Famous for its Great Keep, one of the finest examples in Britain, it is also the birthplace of Henry VII, who founded the Tudor dynasty. Cromwell besieged it in 1648. There is a brass rubbing centre and events every Sunday throughout the summer.
