Steve and Jessica met in the fall of 2003 through the Bronco Marching Band. They didn't ever "formally" meet, but in the spring of 2004, both went to Orlando as members of the WMU pep band, traveling with the WMU men's basketball team to the first round of the NCAA tournament, and through that trip became friends. Throughout the summer, they continued to get to know each other better, and the beginnings of a romance developed. Additionally, during that summer, Jessica decided to transfer to a different school, and ended up moving to Chicago at the end of the summer. Despite the distance, once the school year began, it became apparent to Jessica and Steve that their relationship was more than just friends. They defined the relationship in September 19, 2004.
Steve and Jessica were officially engaged (with a ring and a date, as her mother says is necessary to be engaged) on August 2, 2005.
