Byers Biography

Byers

John Fitzgerald Byers (Bruce Harwood) is the neatly trimmed, suited member of the Lone Gunmen. A former FCC official, his eyes were opened to vast possibilities of government conspiracy in 1989 when a woman named Susan Modesky approached him with an explanation of a government test being done in Baltimore. As he tried to help her, he met two computer hackers named Langly and Frohike, with whom he teamed up with to create the Lone Gunman cabal (from the fifth season episode "Unusual Suspects"). He has a serious demeanor and has a vast knowledge of conspiracy theory in his quick-thinking mind.

He first appeared along with his colleagues in the first season episode "E.B.E." to help Mulder with his UFO investigation. When Mulder implied that UFO's started the Gulf War, he said "That's why we like you, Mulder. Your ideas are weirder than ours." In the second season episode "One Breath" he figured out quickly the chemistry at the heart of Scully's unusual disease. In the second season finale "Anasazi" he described to Mulder how a man referred to as The Thinker hacked into government files on UFO salvage operations. In the Season 4 episode "Memento Mori", Byers and Mulder broke into a medical center searching for anything that would shed light on Scully's cancer. In the fifth season episodes "Redux" and "Redux II" Mulder came to the Lone Gunmen to try to find a cure for Scully. In the episode "Kill Switch", the Lone Gunmen helped Mulder and Scully investigate the murder of a computer genius.

In the X-Files movie, Byers let Mulder take his clothes so Mulder could sneak out of a hospital to try to save Scully.
