Despite having released a B-Wing pilot twice already, Hasbro has yet to produce a figure in the proper red color scheme, much less in human proportions (despite the fact that only human pilots are seen in Return of the Jedi ). Using the head of a Godzilla "O'Neil" figure, the arms from a Grand Moff Tarkin, and a little Tamiya putty, I put together this custom figure. Because the original alien head that fit onto this torso was so large, major modifications had to be made to both the neck and the helmet to accomodate the smaller human head. A plastic white ring was fitted in place under the collar line, between the neck peg of the head and the hole in the torso. This raised the head to the appropriate height, while still allowing it to rotate like any Star Wars figure. The head itself was sanded down considerably, so that a new hairline and eyebrows could be sculpted over the existing features. |

Most of the sculpting work was done between the knees and the boots, in order to give the figure an average human stature. As always, the parts swapping and sculpting was much easier than the painting. I had to apply about eight coats of red paint before the color on the arms (originally grey) matched the color on the torso (originally white). The straps, hoses, boots, hair, and eyes were also painted and re-painted several times over before I was satisfied with the color scheme. |

The helmet was cut and trimmed at several points, including the "straps" on either side of the breath mask and lengthwise along the rims of the earpieces, re-glued, and then further hollowed out with a Dremel to fit the shape of the human head.

On the left is Hasbro's 1999 "Ten Numb" B-Wing pilot (the figure also re-released with the B-Wing vehicle), based on costume tests for a character who never appeared onscreen. On the right is Kenner's 1983 B-Wing Pilot, more accurate to the film but somewhat lacking in detail or play value, and only useful as inspiration for my custom (center). |
