Background photo is of my dad, Bruce C Smith now living in Missouri.

The source for this information is information is my uncle J. F. Smith sent in sympathy card. To Mike, Sandra, Tommy, Patricia, Terry Paul and families, I have delayed sending this sympathy card as I wanted to add a little bit of history.

Bruce was stationed at Myrtle Beach, S.C. in Air Force and had a furlough and I met him at Eldorado, Kansas where Delvin and A.F. lived with Vance and Delzine and Delvin was working at Beech Aircraft in Wichita, Ks. Our uncle Mel had an old Chevrolet Coupe there and it was a 1928 or 30 model. Anyway, the door posts were made of wood and they had kinda got wallowed out as the door hinges were screwed on with what looked like wood screws. When the driver's door was opened, it would drop own about 3 inches and had to be lifted back up. The connecting rods had to be tightened, so Delvin said so I went to Western Auto, bought a screwdriver to get the oil pan off and removed the bolts holding the rods and removed some shims. I knew nothing about what I was doing except to be sure to get the oil cups facing in the right direction so the revolution of the crankshaft would pick up oil and keep the motor running. When Bruce got there we left the next morning. The speed limit in wartime was 35 miles per hour and we didn't exceed this speed except on a long hill in Oklahoma where we got up to 50. No one passed us because everone observed the speed. Bruce slept a lot because I think he had ridden the bus all night to get there.

Bruce reminded me that no one would take our stamps for gas when we stopped as he was in uniform and they thought it was their patriotic duty to see us on our way. We got to Lockney and I think I let Bruce out at the Davis farm and I came on to Muleshoe. The next day they showed up and planned to go to Clovis as a health certificate was not required but Bruce found a Dr. in Muleshoe who would give them a certificate and they got married at our house by the Church of Christ Minister.

They spent the first night in our house and I had to sleep with mom and dad on a pallet on the floor. I remember hearing moma saying to dad, "I'm worried that I didn't put enough cover on the bed and they might not be comfortable.". Dad said, "Shut up Edna and go to sleep they won't ever know the difference!"

I guess they didn't know any difference. I think that was the first time I met Doris.

She was born in December of 1925 and I was born in May of 26 so she was about 6 months older than I am.

It is with great sadness that I learned of her expiration and convey to each of you my sympathy in this time of grief and sorrow.

Mom was actually born 3 Dec 1926
