Florence Marie Davis daughter of Marquis Randolph Davis
Florence Marie Davis was born Apr 18 1904 in Whitman Co., St John, WA, and died Jun 23 1974 in Lane Co., Eugene, Or. She married Henry Courtney Potter Jul 18 1924 in Clark Co., Vancouver,WA. He was born Feb 24, 1896 in Lane Co., Hale, OR and died Nov 22 1966 in Lane Co., Eugene, OR.

Notes for Florence Marie Davis: Florence was the compilers mother and grandmother to co-compiler, Deb. She along with her mother and sisters, left Sunset, Washington ca 1921-22 arriving in Portland by train. Florence at the age of 2 had major surgery in an attempt to discover a throat problem which prevented her from speaking in a voice above a whisper. Three doctors in Calgary, Alberta, Canada were recommended and the family went north. She was in and out of the hospital for two years but made a recovery although her whisper was now a raspy whisper. Her mother described the growth in her throat as the size of a 'California olive' ! Her vocal chords were severely damaged during the surgery but over the years they became stronger - by the time I was in my teens her voice was more easily understood but extremely raspy. In the late 1950s she had an operation to 'clean' the vocal chords and she came out of that with what we call a 'whiskey tenor'! We laughed with my dad when he complained how he had been so lucky to mary a woman who coudn't sass or talk back to him and now 'she never shuts up'!

Although Florence had only gone through the 6th grade because of her throat problem, she was very intelligent and obtained a job at age 17/18 as stocking clerk at Meier & Frank which was then the largest department store in Portland, Oregon. Not too long after starting to work she met my father who was renting a room in the home of his Tabor relatives there in Portland - He had been released from the Navy and working in the automotive electrical business which he continued to do untill he started his own business in 1939 in Eugene, Oregon.

Notes for Henry Courtney Potter. Henry Courtney was the father of compiler, Laurann and grandfather of co-compiler Deb. Henry Courtney was nicknamed "Coak" by his father and was called Coak or Courtney through his lifetime. He served in the Navy WWI: opened his own automotive radiator and gas tank repair business, Coak's Radiator Service. In Eugene, Oregon, 1939 he continued to operate the business with his son in law Ernie Colombo, as manager untill his health failed in 1959. Ernie and his wife Ardelle bought the business and continued to run it untill the early 1970s when the sold and moved to Lake Tahoe.

Ernie died in 1986 leaving Ardelle and their son, Tony, to operate the restaurant "Hamburgers A-go-go" which Ernie and Ardelle had purchased shortly after moving to Tahoe. Ardelle is pretty much retired from the working portion of the business and Tony is the operator manager as the compiler LC updated this info in July 2000.
