Texas Southern vs. University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff By BAMBI HALL Houston, Texas ¾ Playing in unseasonably cold and rainy weather, Texas Southern celebrated its 53rd homecoming with a 21-18 victory against conference rival Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Robertson Stadium in Houston, Texas. With the victory, TSU improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1952. TSU and Pine Bluff came into Saturday's contest ranked number two and three in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, respectively. The Tigers also owned the nation's number one defense. "We really worked hard this week, we knew it was going to be a big game," said Cortez Hankton, wide receiver for the Tigers. Junior linebacker Lernard Mack, garnered a career high 17 tackles including 5 for a loss of 24 yards and one sack that cost the Golden Lions 12 yards. "We came out just like we wanted to, but then we let them get away with some things on special teams," said Mack, "At half-time we said we had to step it up another notch, so when we came back out- we just kept fighting." UAPB won the toss, but played seesaw with the Tigers until 6:50 in the first quarter. TSU running back Waynmon Steed scored from one yard out to put the Tigers on the board first. The Golden Lions scored two early field goals in the second quarter, but wide receiver Mike "Quick" Davis hauled in a five-yard pass from Tiger quarterback Adam Lamb to extend the TSU lead to 14-6. On the night, Lamb passed for 141 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He netted 100 yards rushing for the Tiger offense. Ron Johnson answered for Pine Bluff with a 93-yard burst up field, leaving the Golden Lions behind 14-12 at halftime. Two failed two-point conversions were costly to the Golden Lions in the end. "I knew we were going to have to play well, especially with the elements conducive to their running game," said head coach Bill Thomas, "It just goes to show you what you can do when you don't quit. Our guys laid in there and hit with them and really came together as a team." Defensively, linebacker Jeremy Jones followed Mack with nine tackles, one for a loss of 21 yards.
