Tony Wilson

Head Strength and Conditioning Coach

Tony Wilson is in his second year as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Tiger Athletic Department. Wilson coordinates the strength training for all student-athletes at Texas Southern. He counsels the student-athletes on nutrition and the importance of eating right as related to athletic performance. As a result, the student-athletes at TSU have continued to become stronger and faster under his guidance.

Wilson started his athletic career as a student at Fort Bend Willowridge High School, where he played football for a team that was ranked number two in the nation, during his senior year. Upon graduation, Wilson joined the United States Army and excelled in military sports from 1987-90.

In 1990, Wilson attended TSU and played running back for the Tiger football team until 1993. He holds multiple national certifications as a personal trainer and is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Wilson has one son, Anfernee.

Ricky Jackson Freeman

Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach

Ricky Jackson begins his first season as Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for Texas Southern. Prior to coaching at TSU, Coach Jackson, a.k.a. "Action Jackson", was a professional prizefighter from 1989 until his retirement in 2001.

A seasoned fighter, Jackson possesses numerous boxing accolades. In 1994, he fought and earned the title of Texas Cruiserweight Champion. In the same year, he moved up in weight class to fight in the heavyweight division, and won the Texas Heavyweight Championship, which he held from 1994-2001. During his boxing tenure, he achieved world rankings with the World Boxing Union (10th), the NABF and the World Boxing Council (16th). As a free agent, Jackson fought for some of the top promoters and trainers in the country- Cedrick Kushner and the Duva's, and Main Event Monitor, to name a few. In 1998, Jackson surrendered self-management and signed on with the infamous Don King, with whom he remained until 2000.

He attributes his extensive knowledge for conditioning and training to someone he call, "his greatest mentor", nine-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney. Under Haney's watchful eye, Jackson learned true dedication and commitment to achieve superior results in athletic training.

Jackson is very active in various community organizations and, in 1996, he was awarded a City of Houston Proclamation for "Ricky Jackson Day", by former Mayor Bob Lanier.

Jackson graduated from Jack Yates High School in 1983. He and wife Lori have one son, Lorne.
