Robert J. Taylor

Track/Football/Basketball (1968 - 1972)

   

    

Robert J. Taylor, known as "Big Rob", was both a sprinter and football player during his playing and running days at Texas Southern University. Taylor gained his recognition as a four-time All-American in track. He was known for his great finish in the 100-yard dash. Taylor was also a member of "The Flying Six," the six-man team that made up the TSU track and field squad.

     

Taylor played football and ran track for TSU from 1968-1972. His track resume included: Three-time NAIA 100-meter champ (1970-1972), One-time 100 meter SWAC Champion (1972), One-time National AAU champion (1972). Outside of TSU, Taylor gained a silver medal in the 1972 Olympics in the 100 meters and garnered a gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay that ran a then world-record time of 39.1. Taylor's time of 9.00 in the 100-yard dash, is one of his proudest achievements. 

     

Robert was inducted into Texas' "Outstanding College Athletes Hall of Fame" in 1973.

     

Robert and his wife, Cheryl, have three children, Robert, III, Jonathan and Cecilee.  Robert, III plays professional football for the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL.
