Terps Upset No.1 Florida, Celebrations Shot Down, Students Locked Up!

Several freshmen got a taste of the University Police during the semi-riot following the men’s basketball 69-68 overtime victory over number one ranked Florida.

Freshman Eric Snyder felt the presence the most.  As he walked around Byrd Stadium following the activity at the south end of the stadium, Snyder was shot in the leg with what appeared to be a pepper loaded paintball.

Chancellor Kirwan: State Budget Figures Misleading
There is no immediate remedy in sight for tuition dilemmas and the details behind the problem may be composed of many myths.

That’s the message Chancellor of the University System of Maryland William Kirwin shared with The Terrapin Times in an interview Dec. 2.

Students Address Abortion With Flag Display

A display of 4,000 blue and pink flags decorated the field of McKeldin Library, serving as a picture of the number of pregnancies terminated every day.

Members of the Maryland organization Students for Life organized the “cemetery” demonstration on Tuesday, Nov. 18 in an attempt to educate others on the reality of abortion.

“The question is not one of choice, but rather what is the unborn,” said student activist Matt Elkins.

Yale Historian: U.S. an "Empire of Liberty"

The Center for Historical Studies at the University of Maryland co-sponsored a lecture given by Historian John Lewis Gaddis on November 6 at the Nyumburu Cultural Center.  Gaddis, a Professor of History at Yale University, gave an hour-long lecture to a packed room of several hundred people, mostly faculty and graduate students in the history department, as well as a good number of undergraduates interested in the topic of discussion: “America’s Place in the World in the 21st Century.”

The Only Thing "Un" About SCAN's "Unbiased" Claim is its Truth

In the November issue of The Terrapin Times, SCAN PAC Treasurer and Political Director Drew Vetter said, “SCAN is a bipartisan organization that…doesn’t blame Republicans or Democrats.”  As of yet, SCAN PAC has not proven to be anything but partisan.  The Terrapin Times promised its readers to hold SCAN accountable to its bipartisan claims and to investigate partisan activities on behalf of SCAN, both in their inception and in their alleged efforts to help higher education.

'Holiday' Gift Giving Guide

The season of giving has arrived, and it has college students scrambling for great gifts that fit within a tight budget.

Fret not, friends.  When it comes to presents, “it’s the thought that really counts.”

Proving the truth behind that age-old adage are these carefully thought-out gift ideas.

USM Salary Increases = Tuition Increases

The University System of Maryland, which handed down tuition increases of 21% to College Park students over the past year and has already approved an 11% tuition increase for next year (with potentially more increases on the way), is under investigation by the student body and is now being forced to

answer the questions of state legislators.

American Ideals:

Personal Responsibility

We have much to be thankful for this Christmas and every holiday season for the past 227 years. As Americans we have the great luxury of living in a free society. Our country is one of the longest standing democracies in the history of the world; however, having a free society does not come without

 much work and persistence.

Kappa Alpha Theta

If you take 95 girls and put them in a house together, what would you have?

Drama? Catfights? At Kappa Alpha Theta they have a sisterhood, composed of women from different backgrounds, who work together to do great things for their community and their campus.

Zeta Beta Tau

What reasons does a person have for joining a fraternity?  Is it for the social experience, academic importance, or community involvement?  At Zeta Beta Tau all three of these facets are important parts of being a brother.

President Arlen Marmel outlined the goal of ZBT to be “Motivating the brothers to be the best fraternity, while improving the house, and reaching out to other organizations.”

Special Feature to The Terrapin Times:

Army ROTC: Behind the Camo

Uniformed students can be seen all over the Maryland campus.
The basketball team wears uniforms when it plays at the Comcast
Center. The marching band wears uniforms when it performs during halftime
at Byrd Stadium. The football team wore uniforms when it beat the Virginia
Wahoos last month.
But these are not the only groups of students that wear uniforms.
Maryland’s Army ROTC cadets can sometimes be spotted on campus in their
battle dress uniforms (camouflage) or formal uniforms.  Camouflage is worn to
ROTC classes and labs, while the formal uniform is reserved for special
occasions.

Entertainment

House of Sand and Fog

In her thirties, Kathy Lazaro’s (Jennifer Connelly) life is already well on its way down.  Divorced, unemployed, and a recovering alcoholic, Kathy’s only real connection to reality is a house along the shore she inherited from her father.  Littered with trash, dirty dishes, and unopened mail, the home is a shrine to her depression. Her resulting apathy causes her to be evicted when she fails to resolve a legal snafu over unpaid taxes.

Thursday, Thrice & Coheed And Cambia

Riding the wave of success brought by their major label debuts, Thursday and Thrice brought their cold, co-headlining show to Washington on November 20th.  Along for the ride was New York band Coheed and Cambria who, despite remaining on the independent Equal Vision records, have developed a strong nationwide fan base as a result of their unique music and relentless touring.

"Relentless" Images of Violence Stun Reviewer

On Monday, November 17, the Maryland chapter of the Zionist Organization of America sponsored Relentless: The Struggle for Peace in Israel, at the Hoff Theater. Besides the American media, this was my first exposure to the crisis in Israel, and I must admit it is rather overwhelming to be exposed to such a powerful film without knowing all of the facts.
