  • Germany authorized the Leopard IIA6 demo for Tank2000 project (Nov. 1)

Leopard IIE Germany's Federal Security Council (FSC) authorized long-awaited Krauss Maffei Wegmann to ship a Leopard IIA6 main battle tank to Turkey for extensive trials in the lead-up to the award of a hotly-competed contract to supply about 1,000 modern tanks worth up to $8 billion under the Tank2000 project. The Leopard IIA6 will start its trials in January 10th, 2000 and complete tight demonstrations on hard topography of Turkey until the mid-2000. This decision immediately caused a domestic furors and protests by the junior coalition Green Party.
